SINGAPORE: A man shared his experience of allegedly having a parking space unfairly claimed by a red car in a viral Facebook post.
The incident took place at an Ang Mo Kio parking lot.
The man, Ma Jian Ting, uploaded the video on 31 December with a poetic caption: “Never in my life have I witnessed someone claim parking spaces like they were defending a sacred relic.”
He also wrote, “The audacity and sheer theatrics—she really made it her mission to ensure no one dared challenge her ‘territory.’ A masterclass in selfishness!”
Ma explained that he decided to share the video because the woman passenger in the red car had taken photos and made it seem as though he was in the wrong.
The situation unfolded when both Ma and the red car were waiting for the same parking spot.
Rearcam footage showed that Ma’s car was positioned closer to the spot, prompting him to reverse slowly.
However, the red car suddenly approached quickly, seemingly trying to claim the space.
A woman passenger, wearing a red T-shirt, exited the red car and stood in the parking spot, blocking Ma from reversing further.
Left with no choice, Ma moved forward and conceded the space, as the red car remained unmoving and showed no intention of yielding.
After securing the spot, the woman in red took pictures of Ma’s car, which remained nearby.
Mixed Reactions from Netizens
Netizens had mixed reactions to the video. Some praised Ma for maintaining his composure and avoiding a confrontation, while others questioned why it took him so long to reverse into the spot.
One user commended his patience, saying that not many people would have tolerated that kind of behaviour.
They added that sometimes it’s not worth arguing or fighting and expressed respect for his ability to remain calm.
Another user expressed admiration for his tolerance, stating that he could have simply reversed since the other car didn’t initially block him.
However, some netizens questioned why Ma didn’t confront the woman.
One user asked, “You never go down and scold her?”
Ma explained that he didn’t want to waste time confronting her.
He said that if she had come down and asked politely, he would have gladly given her the spot.
However, he was upset by her audacity to step out of the car and take photos as though it were his fault.
Some users also questioned why it took Ma so long to reverse into the spot.
One commenter said, “If you want to park, just park. Not defending the red car, but the other car came out of the lot, and it took you at least 4-5 seconds to start reversing. Were you dreaming?”
Another user commented that Ma was too slow and suggested that it was his mistake, not the woman’s.
In response, Ma clarified that he knew his reversing wasn’t the fastest, but his rear camera showed the red car approaching, leaving him uncertain about the driver’s intentions.
He emphasised, “The last thing I wanted was to cause an accident over a mere parking lot.”
