The incident occurred around 3am on 1 June at Block 510A Yishun Street 51, just one block away from where another cat, known as King Kong, was previously found dead in a horrific state.

The discovery was shared in the Facebook group Sayang Our Singapore’s Community Cats by Janet, an active member of the community.

According to Janet, a young resident who regularly checks on neighbourhood cats came across the black-and-white cat’s body.

Its legs were unnaturally splayed, prompting concerns about the cause of death.

Uncertain of what to do, the young resident buried the carcass nearby with the help of another resident.

The second resident later contacted Janet, who advised that a police report be lodged. Janet also filed a report with the National Parks Board (NParks).

Carcass Taken for Postmortem Examination

“I have pleaded with NParks to take in the body for a postmortem as it seemed to be an unnatural death,” Janet told Mothership.

The carcass was later exhumed so that an NParks contractor could collect it for possible examination.

Janet explained that the awkward position of the legs and the presence of faeces near the body led her to suspect unnatural causes.

No other visible injuries were found.

She added that the area is monitored by police CCTV cameras and expressed hope that the footage could help clarify what happened.

NParks Launches Investigation

Responding to media queries on Monday (2 June), NParks confirmed that it is investigating the incident.

“NParks received feedback on a cat found dead at the foot of a staircase at Yishun Street 51 and is looking into the matter,” the agency said in a statement.

“We urge the public not to speculate on the details of the case and allow investigations to run their proper course.”

Suspected Cat Cruelty Cases in Singapore

This latest case adds to a troubling spate of suspected cruelty incidents involving community cats across Singapore.

Tampines: Sunshine Found Dead

On 24 May, a well-loved community cat named Sunshine was found dead at Block 897, Tampines Street 81.

The body was wrapped in plastic packaging and placed beside a rubbish bin at the void deck.

A feeder told Mothership that Sunshine was still bleeding when discovered, although there was no blood at the scene.

Sunshine was taken to a vet, who concluded that the cat had suffered blunt force trauma to the right side of his head.

The vet also found that his lower jaw was dislocated and estimated that Sunshine had likely died just a few hours before his body was discovered.

While there were no other obvious fractures or injuries, the vet did not rule out the possibility of abuse. The injuries could have resulted from a vehicle collision, a forceful blow to the head, or a fall from height.

The community is now appealing for witnesses who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area.

Punggol: Shere Khan Succumbs to Injuries

On 13 May, cat welfare group LUNI Singapore appealed for witnesses after a male tabby cat, Shere Khan (also known as Papa Cat), was found severely injured near Block 326B Sumang Walk in Punggol.

The injuries were believed to have occurred between 11 and 12 May.

Despite immediate veterinary care, the cat later succumbed to his injuries.

LUNI founder Nina Astolfi said the vet’s report indicated possible abuse, including bulging eyes, facial bruising, tongue lacerations, frayed nails, dehydration, and hypothermia.

However, NParks later stated that its investigation, including the vet’s assessment, found no conclusive evidence of cruelty.

The injuries were consistent with blunt force trauma, possibly from a traffic accident.

The cat’s caregiver was contacted via microchip, and CCTV footage from the car park was reviewed.

Due to the severity of his injuries, the cat was euthanised on welfare grounds and later cremated.

Yishun: King Kong Case Still Under Investigation

On 9 May, a community cat named King Kong was found dead at Yishun Street 51 with signs of extreme abuse.

Residents said the cat had its eyes gouged out and its body dismembered.

NParks is still investigating the incident.

“We urge the public not to further speculate on the details of the ongoing case and to verify their information sources. These are crucial in allowing for a fair round of investigation to be carried out.”

The agency added that it takes all public feedback on alleged animal cruelty seriously and investigates all such reports thoroughly.

Penalties for Animal Cruelty

Under Singapore’s Animals and Birds Act, those convicted of animal cruelty may face fines of up to S$15,000 and/or up to 18 months in jail.

Harsher penalties may apply in cases involving death or serious harm.

Between 2019 and 2023, NParks investigated an average of 1,200 animal cruelty and welfare cases annually — the majority involving cats and dogs.
