SINGAPORE: Yip Pin Xiu, Singapore’s most decorated Paralympian, has announced her engagement to her boyfriend Bruce.
The national swimmer shared the joyous news in an Instagram post on Wednesday (11 December), featuring photos of the romantic proposal.
In the photos, Yip, who was elegantly dressed in a black gown, beamed radiantly as Bruce knelt on one knee to pop the question.
While he appeared calm in the photos, Yip revealed that he was quite nervous during the proposal.
Despite having a prepared speech, nerves took over, and Bruce couldn’t remember a single word. However, this didn’t matter to Yip due to the deep connection they share.
“This man so openly and generously expresses his love at every chance in our lives that at this moment, he did not need any words for me to understand him,” she shared.
Addressing Bruce directly, Yip added touchingly, “With you, I can be softer yet more steady. I have space to be myself. I feel safe and seen. I am unequivocally happy.”
Bruce reciprocated the affection in the comments, expressing his disbelief at being fortunate enough to meet someone like Yip and call her “my love.”
After Yip unsurprisingly said yes, Bruce placed a ring on her finger, and the couple celebrated the moment with a glass of champagne each.
Yip declared they were now in their “fiancé era” and hinted at upcoming nuptials, stating, “Time for us to plan a party!”
The engagement marks yet another highlight in a remarkable year for Yip.
Earlier in 2024, she continued her dominance at the Paris Paralympics by winning double gold in the 100m backstroke S2 and 50m backstroke S2 events, her third consecutive Paralympic double gold.
These victories brought her total number of Paralympic gold medals to seven, adding to her first gold at the Beijing Paralympics in 2008.
Last month, Yip was named Sportswoman of the Year at the Singapore Disability Sports Awards for the fifth time, further cementing her legacy in the sporting world.
