SINGAPORE, 29 MAY 2025 Head Coach Tsutomu Ogura has unveiled the 23-man squad set to don the Singapore jersey this June, as the Lions continue their journey on the road to Riyadh in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup™ Saudi Arabia 2027 qualifiers.

Among the key recalls to the squad are experienced attackers Song Uiyoung, Ikhsan Fandi, and Taufik Suparno. Song makes his return to the national team setup for the first time since featuring in the FIFA World Cup 2026™ qualifier against Korea Republic, while Ikhsan is the most prolific goalscorer named in the squad, with 18 goals in 38 international appearances. Their inclusion, along with Taufik’s, adds valuable depth and experience to Ogura’s attacking options.

“I’m always honoured to be part of the national team, and I’m looking forward to linking up with the players and the staff,” said Song.

“I’ve had urgent family matters to attend to and I’m relieved that I’ve managed to get across that challenge – and grateful that I’ve been afforded space to be present for my family,” added the Lion City Sailors man.

“I’m now focused on fighting for the right to put on the Lions jersey again.”

Singapore Premier League (SPL) Player of the Year nominee, Shawal Anuar, misses out because of a medical procedure scheduled during the international window. After what was an extended league season that has taken a physical toll, both the Sailors and the national team staff have agreed on a plan that is aimed at having the nippy forward fresh and raring to go for the 2025/26 SPL season and the next step on the Asian Cup qualifying campaign.

Young Lions forward Amir Syafiz earns his first senior national team call-up. Known for his pace and tireless work rate, the 19-year-old will be aiming to impress.

The full squad will come together on 3 June.

The Lions have two matches on the horizon — an international friendly against the Maldives at Bishan Stadium, followed by a crucial away clash against Bangladesh in Dhaka.

The match against the Maldives on 5 June on Bishan’s natural grass pitch was a deliberate decision made to replicate conditions in Bangladesh, and will serve as vital preparation for the qualifier in Dhaka five days later. The Lions will be aiming to improve their cutting edge in front of goal, especially after their goalless draw against Hong Kong in the opening Group C qualifier in March.

With only the group winner guaranteed a place at the AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, the stakes are high. All four teams — Singapore, India, Hong Kong, and Bangladesh — are currently level on one point after the first round of fixtures, setting the stage for a tightly contested campaign. Ogura’s charges will be hoping to secure their first win and stake their claim for progression to the next stage.

Tickets for the Maldives game are selling fast, with limited seats still available for purchase through Ticketek and the Football Association of Singapore’s (FAS) official website (fas.org.sg/tickets).
