Train services on Singapore’s East-West Line (EWL) were disrupted on 4 April, 2025, following a track fault that occurred at approximately 1.10pm.
The incident affected the west-bound route between Jurong East and Clementi stations.
In an official update at 3.45pm, SMRT stated that its engineering team was initially unable to access the fault site due to adverse weather conditions and the risk of lightning.
With the weather improving by mid-afternoon, engineers were deployed to the site to assess and rectify the issue.
By 4.05pm, SMRT confirmed that train services had progressively resumed from around 4pm onwards. With normal operations restored, free regular bus services that had been activated during the disruption were withdrawn.
During the interruption, SMRT implemented a series of interim measures to minimise inconvenience for commuters.
Shuttle train services were arranged to operate in both directions between Jurong East and Lakeside stations. In addition, free regular bus services were deployed between Buona Vista and Boon Lay stations.
Commuters were advised to factor in up to 20 additional minutes of travel time while these arrangements were in place.
The incident affected a stretch of nine MRT stations between Queenstown and Boon Lay, a busy section of the EWL.
Reports of delays emerged throughout the afternoon, with commuters sharing their experiences online.
Photographs circulating on WhatsApp showed significant crowds forming at Lakeside MRT station, indicating the scale of the disruption.
Track faults on the East-West Line, one of Singapore’s oldest and most heavily used MRT lines, have been a recurring issue in the past.
This incident adds to a series of public transport disruptions in recent months, raising concerns among regular commuters about the robustness of rail infrastructure.
