Commuters on Singapore’s East-West Line (EWL) faced delays of up to 20 minutes on 4 April, 2025, due to a track fault between Queenstown and Boon Lay stations.
According to multiple advisories issued by SMRT Corporation via Twitter and MyTransport.SG at around 1.30pm, train services remained operational but were significantly slowed down.
The operator advised passengers to plan for extended journey times across the nine-station stretch.
To mitigate the inconvenience, SMRT activated shuttle train services between Jurong East and Lakeside stations.
Additionally, free regular bus services were made available between designated stops at Buona Vista and Boon Lay. These buses are expected to serve affected commuters along the western segment of the EWL.
In its latest update, posted shortly after 2pm, SMRT stated that it was working to resolve the issue and restore normal services as quickly as possible. No specific time was given for full service recovery.
As an alternative route, commuters travelling from Buona Vista were advised to use the Circle Line to continue their journey.
Those heading to the city were encouraged to travel via the North-South Line and switch to the Thomson-East Coast Line at Woodlands.
Photos shared on a WhatsApp group showed crowds gathering at Lakeside MRT station, with commuters affected by the train delay.
The disruption comes during a busy weekday afternoon when travel demand is typically moderate, with potential peak hour congestion expected if the fault persists into the evening.
Track faults on the East-West Line, one of Singapore’s oldest and most heavily used MRT lines, have been a recurring issue in the past.
SMRT has not confirmed whether any engineering teams are already on-site to assess the fault or how long repairs may take. Commuters are encouraged to check official transport channels for further updates.
The MyTransport.SG portal confirmed the same advisory as issued on SMRT’s social media, reiterating the 20-minute delay and the availability of alternate transport modes.
This incident adds to a series of public transport disruptions in recent months, raising concerns among regular commuters about the robustness of rail infrastructure.
The situation is still developing, and more details are expected from SMRT and the LTA as investigations proceed.
