Singapore welcomed a rare showcase of Japanese heritage and craftsmanship as Pilot Pen Singapore, together with the Japan Creative Centre, officially opened The Timeless Craftsmanship of Maki-e – NAMIKI: Past, Present, Future on 13 November 2025. Running until 22 November, the week-long exhibition brings the centuries-old art of Maki-e to local audiences, shining a spotlight on its beauty, precision, and enduring cultural significance.
The exclusive opening event gathered distinguished guests, collectors, and partners, who were among the first to view NAMIKI’s 2025 Limited-Edition Fountain Pen, Blooming Flowers in Profusion. Singapore was selected as the first country to unveil this exquisite creation, reflecting NAMIKI’s commitment to honouring craftsmanship and strengthening cultural exchange through art.
A Night Honouring Tradition and Innovation
Gracing the opening as Guest-of-Honour was His Excellency Ambassador Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at-Large at Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was joined by esteemed attendees including His Excellency Ambassador Ishikawa Hiroshi, Ambassador of Japan to Singapore, Mr. Fumio Fujisaki, President of Pilot Corporation, and Mr. Taisuke Ryu, Managing Director of Pilot Pen Singapore.
Opening speeches set the tone for the evening, highlighting the intricate artistry of Maki-e and NAMIKI’s vital role in preserving and evolving this traditional lacquer craft. Speakers also reflected on how art continues to strengthen ties between Japan and Singapore, fostering appreciation and understanding through shared cultural expressions.
A ceremonial photo opportunity in front of the Blooming Flowers in Profusion masterpiece marked the official launch of the exhibition.
Journey Through NAMIKI’s Artistic Legacy
Guests were invited to explore the exhibition, which traces NAMIKI’s artistic evolution from its early pioneering works to its modern-day limited-edition creations. Archival masterpieces offer glimpses into the brand’s origins, while contemporary pieces highlight how traditional techniques continue to inspire innovation.
Through these displays, visitors gained insight into the meticulous skill behind Maki-e, from delicate lacquer layering to intricate gold-powder detailing, and the cultural stories embedded within each handcrafted pen.
Live Demonstrations and Craft Experiences
A major highlight of the evening was a live demonstration by NAMIKI senior artisan and Kokkokai master, Mr. Seiki Chida, who specially travelled from Japan for the event. Guests watched Maki-e techniques come to life up close, gaining a deeper appreciation for the discipline and dedication required to create each masterpiece.
Adding another interactive touch, the PILOT Pen Doctor was present to showcase the art of pen restoration and repair, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the craftsmanship that keeps writing instruments in pristine condition.
