The People’s Action Party (PAP) has announced its five-member team to contest the newly formed Marine Parade-Braddell Heights Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the upcoming general election. The team will be led by Manpower Minister Tan See Leng.

Dr Tan, 60, will be joined by Minister of State for Home Affairs and National Development Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, incumbent MPs Seah Kian Peng and Tin Pei Ling, and first-time candidate Diana Pang.

The team was introduced during a press conference on 20 April. Dr Tan expressed gratitude to residents for their support over the last five years and emphasised the importance of continued work in the GRC.

The new Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC consolidates areas from four former constituencies: Marine Parade GRC, MacPherson SMC, Mountbatten SMC, and Potong Pasir SMC.

Diana Pang, 51, is a business development director and long-time party volunteer. She emphasised her intention to lead with action and heart, saying, “It’s about action… I hope to be a voice, not just to listen, but I will also act on it.”

With Pang’s inclusion, incumbent Marine Parade GRC MP Mohd Fahmi Aliman will not be part of the PAP slate for the new GRC. Fahmi had served one term, overseeing the Geylang Serai ward, and is currently a director at the National Trades Union Congress.

Dr Tan stated that a decision on whether Fahmi will contest in another constituency would be finalised on Nomination Day, which falls on 23 April.

Box 4

The PAP’s previous team in Marine Parade GRC in 2020 secured 57.74 per cent of the vote against the Workers’ Party (WP), which garnered 42.26 per cent. Of that team, only Dr Tan and Seah will remain in the newly drawn constituency.

Former Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin, who led the 2020 PAP team, resigned in 2023 following revelations of an extramarital affair with fellow MP Cheng Li Hui. Another former MP, Edwin Tong, is expected to stand in East Coast GRC after the Joo Chiat ward he oversaw was absorbed there.

Dr Faishal, 56, returns to Marine Parade after having been an MP for Nee Soon GRC since 2011. He began his political career in Marine Parade and currently serves as lead adviser to Wisma Geylang Serai, which falls within the GRC.

Seah Kian Peng, 63, has served Marine Parade GRC since 2006 and is one of two MPs from the previous team staying on.

Tin Pei Ling, 41, a three-term MP for MacPherson since 2011, joins the new team after her single-member constituency was subsumed into the GRC.

Tin won 71.74 per cent of the vote in the 2020 election, contesting against Goh Meng Seng of the People’s Power Party.

Separately, the PAP announced that Mountbatten SMC will be contested by shipping lawyer Gho Sze Kee. He replaces veteran MP Lim Biow Chuan, who is stepping down after four parliamentary terms.

According to the Elections Department, Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC has an electorate of 131,493 voters, of whom around 75 per cent are from the former Marine Parade GRC.

The Workers’ Party is expected to mount a challenge, having continued ground engagement in the area since the last election, though whom it will field in the GRC remains unknown.
