The Importance of Gastric Cancer Screening

Gastric cancer, or stomach cancer, develops when cells in the stomach’s inner lining grow uncontrollably, potentially spreading to other organs like the liver and lungs. Early detection is key to improving survival rates, as stage one gastric cancer has a 90% survival rate, while stage four sees a drop to less than 20%.

According to the Singapore Cancer Registry’s 2022 report, around 600 cases of gastric cancer are diagnosed annually in Singapore, with men more likely to be affected than women. While early stages of gastric cancer often show no symptoms, signs like upper abdominal discomfort, indigestion, bloating, or loss of appetite can be warning signals.

Who Is at Risk?

  • Individuals over 50
  • Those with a family history of stomach cancer
  • Those with a history of Helicobacter pylori infection, gastritis, or peptic ulcers
