SINGAPORE: A local Reddit user appears to have won at the job lottery, securing not one but two offers, one at a global tech firm and another at a regional one.
He asked for advice from more experienced netizens, since the job at the global tech firm is more “chill” than the other, and both offer similar salaries of between S$105,000 to S$110,000 in total compensation.
“I have interned in both companies before, so I have a good idea of their work culture,” the post author wrote.
He added that the global company offers a hybrid arrangement, is located an hour away, has a chill culture with a 4.5-day workweek, and that the team he interned with is supportive.
The other firm is in-person but is less than half an hour away, and while it’s not chill, it’s “not incredibly busy either,” though he may occasionally need to take work home.
“My main concern is that A’s work is internal-facing and might not build up useful skillsets, whereas B is more user-facing. While I’m perfectly content staying in A long term, I’m just worried if I need to change jobs, my skills won’t match my YoE. That said, A is known to be stable while B has had a couple of layoffs in recent years, but who knows what will happen in the future,” he added.
Commenters on his post were shocked that he’s received such good offers, with some asking if the companies are still looking to hire.
“100k annually for a fresh grad and chill is a dream job lol. Still got openings? Serious question, pls DM me,” one wrote.
“Sobs, my TC was like 60-70k when I started, and now I’m only starting to hit 80-90k as a senior,” shared another.
“Lol, right, even with some YoE I’m dying with lower TC,” remarked a third.
As for advice, Reddit users had this to say.
“Is B Shopee lol? I’d go with A. Big Tech is usually quite chill, but the brand name will still carry you far,” one wrote.
“A global brand name is better than a regional brand name,” another agreed, writing that “Google/Amazon are significantly better than Shopee/Grab. I would go with A. As you said, more stable, a bit more chill, which can be good to have early on, if there’s too much time, you have the agency to use that extra time to go self-learn other stuff.
The global brand name always takes you further, and global MNCs usually have better bosses (esp if your boss is angmoh). If you get an Asian boss, then the chances of having a painful boomer boss are also high. A is the easy option here.”
