SINGAPORE: Train services on Singapore’s East-West Line (EWL) were disrupted on the morning of 23 April 2025 following a track point fault between Tampines and Pasir Ris stations.
Train operator SMRT first reported the issue at 6.59am, advising commuters to expect an additional 10 minutes of travel time between the two stations.
Despite the fault, train services remained operational. However, eastbound trains were made to turn around at Tampines and head westbound, requiring adjustments to commuter travel plans.
By 7.18am, SMRT confirmed that train service between Tampines and Pasir Ris continued to be available, albeit with delays in both directions.
To mitigate the disruption, SMRT introduced a bi-directional shuttle train service specifically between Tampines and Pasir Ris.
Free regular bus services were also deployed to assist commuters travelling along the same route. These services were announced via SMRT’s social media channels starting from 6.59am.
A visual diagram released by SMRT helped explain the revised train operations and alternate transport options.
Several commuters took to SMRT’s Facebook page to share their experiences. One mentioned having to wait from 6.28am to 6.45am at Tampines before successfully boarding a westbound train.
No estimated time for the full restoration of normal service was provided by SMRT at the time of reporting.
Commuters were advised to factor in longer travelling times and consider using the free bus services where possible.
This is not the first time track faults have disrupted services on the EWL, one of Singapore’s oldest and busiest MRT lines.
