SMRT investigates late-night unauthorised post on official X account

SINGAPORE: SMRT Corporation has confirmed that an unauthorised post appeared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account late on 27 July 2025, and said that an investigation into the incident is under way.

The post, made at 11.08pm, displayed a photo of a South Asian woman dressed in traditional attire. It was accompanied by a one-letter caption: “R”.

The post remained live for approximately 10 minutes.

In that time, it garnered over 2,000 views and was reposted more than 20 times.

These figures were significantly higher than the usual engagement levels seen on SMRT’s official account, which has more than 471,000 followers.

The account typically provides public service announcements and updates regarding train service disruptions in Singapore.

Responding to media queries on 28 July, SMRT said it was aware of the incident and had taken action to report it to the platform.

“We are aware of an unauthorised post that appeared on our official X account late Sunday night. ”

“We have reported the incident to X and are currently investigating this matter,” said SMRT’s group chief communications officer Margaret Teo.

The unexplained post quickly drew attention across online communities, particularly on Reddit. Users shared screenshots and speculated about the nature of the post.

Some suggested that the account had been hacked, while others believed a staff member may have mistakenly posted personal content using the corporate profile.

A number of Reddit users also joked about SMRT’s apparent digital blunder, quipping that “not just the trains break down, but their Twitter too”.

Others questioned the professionalism of account handlers, pointing to the possibility that the individual managing the social media account may have failed to switch back to a personal account before posting.
