MALAYSIA: A Singaporean man has been fined a total of RM9,100 (approximately S$2,770) by the Magistrate’s Court in Johor Bahru on Thursday (12 June) after pleading guilty to charges related to a road rage incident that went viral in Malaysia.
Cheng Kuan Poh, 40, admitted to two offences — mischief resulting in property damage and using words or gestures intended to insult another person’s modesty.
The court imposed fines of RM4,300 and RM4,800 for each offence respectively.
Both offences are punishable by fines and/or imprisonment — up to three months’ jail for mischief and up to five years’ jail for using insulting words or gestures.
Cheng, a human resources manager, appealed for leniency, telling the court that he had never committed an offence in Malaysia before.
His lawyer added that Cheng is single, supports his elderly parents, and earns a monthly income of around S$2,000.
He was arrested by Johor police on 8 June, a day after the altercation.
Authorities confirmed that he had no prior criminal record, and his urine test returned negative for drugs.
According to Johor Bahru North police, a Malaysian couple lodged a police report following the incident on 7 June.
The couple had been driving a BMW around the Tun Aminah area in Skudai, Johor, when their vehicle was reportedly obstructing a car behind and was honked at multiple times.
The vehicle behind was a Singapore-registered Toyota Altis driven by Cheng.
An argument subsequently broke out between the two parties at the roadside.
Viral videos of the confrontation showed Cheng shouting at the couple, pushing them, kicking their car, and even spitting at them.
The BMW sustained visible dents, though no injuries were reported.
The incident quickly spread online, drawing widespread condemnation from Malaysian netizens.
