The Singapore United Party (SUP) on 17 April 2025 introduced its five-member slate for Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency (GRC) ahead of the upcoming general election, confirming a three-cornered contest with the People’s Action Party (PAP) and the People’s Power Party (PPP).
The team will be led by SUP secretary-general Andy Zhu, 42, who previously contested in Ang Mo Kio GRC under the Reform Party (RP) in 2020.
Joining him are SUP chairman Ridhuan Chandran, 53, party treasurer Noraini Yunus, 57, businessman Vincent Ng, 52, and first-time candidate and flight attendant Nigel Ng, 39.
The announcement took place at a press briefing at Kebun Baru Food Centre, which began nearly an hour late and concluded in under 10 minutes.
The team did not take questions, citing an “urgent task” — later confirmed as submitting their election deposits.
SUP’s campaign slogan, “Moving Forward, Together,” underscores the party’s emphasis on community partnership.
While the party has not yet released its manifesto, Zhu stated it would be guided by feedback from residents, with concerns such as the high cost of living, housing affordability, and healthcare topping the agenda.
The upcoming contest in Ang Mo Kio GRC is now confirmed as a three-cornered fight.
PPP announced on 5 April its intention to contest the constituency, with its team led by party treasurer William Lim.
PPP secretary-general Goh Meng Seng said the party’s platform would focus on reversing what he called “mismanagement” of population policies over the past two decades under Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
Despite repeated discussions between SUP and PPP to avoid a multi-cornered fight, no agreement has been reached.
PPP has not indicated any plans to withdraw.
Ang Mo Kio GRC, currently led by Senior Minister Lee, is Singapore’s largest electoral division with 161,235 registered voters. In the 2020 general election, the PAP team won 71.91% of the vote in the constituency, defeating the RP team led by Zhu, which secured 28.09%.
Zhu, an associate marketing director at PropNex Realty, has been active in politics since 2008 and previously contested West Coast GRC in 2011 and 2015 under the RP banner, attaining 33.43% and 21.43% of the vote, respectively.
He founded SUP after the 2020 election with several former RP members, including Noraini, who has stood in three prior elections — Ang Mo Kio GRC in 2020, West Coast GRC in 2015 (both under RP), and Jurong GRC in 2011 under the National Solidarity Party (NSP).
Ridhuan, an auditor and active member in engineering and quality institutions, is described by SUP as committed to community empowerment, citizen participation, and sustainability.
The party said he aligns with its broader goals of advancing democracy and the rule of law.
Nigel Ng, the youngest in the team, enters politics with a focus on the challenges faced by middle-income Singaporeans.
SUP said he aims to advocate for fairer policies that address gaps in home ownership and access to social support.
Vincent Ng, a businessman, previously contested Tampines GRC in 2020 under the NSP, where the team garnered 33.59% of the vote.
SUP described him as a strong voice for white-collar professionals, mid-career job seekers, and those impacted by job insecurity.
SUP is a member of “The Coalition,” an informal alliance of opposition parties formed in 2023, which included the NSP, Red Dot United (RDU), and the Singapore People’s Party (SPP).
RDU withdrew from the coalition on 12 April after NSP’s decision to maintain a three-cornered fight in Sembawang GRC.
SUP and its coalition partners expressed “profound disappointment” in response.
Despite the split within the coalition, Zhu reaffirmed SUP’s commitment to its campaign in Ang Mo Kio GRC.
“We are dedicated to working tirelessly with the ruling government to build a more just and equitable Singapore,” he said.
