Fazrul Nawaz will lead a 23-strong Singapore squad competing at the upcoming Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-20 Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers from 6 to 11 August 2025.
Singapore has been drawn in Group B alongside Vietnam, Kyrgyz Republic, and Hong Kong, China in a qualifying tourney that will be hosted in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi.
“We went through a careful selection process looking at current form, attitude, and how players have been progressing in their environments,” said the 39-year-old Fazrul. “We’ve kept a healthy balance of experience and potential.”
The final squad was selected following a recent overseas training camp held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which gave the coaching staff the opportunity to assess players in a competitive and focused environment.
“It’s been a bit more challenging this time – we’ve had to deal with a few injuries, both before and during the camp, which affected our options. But that also opened up opportunities for others to step in,” Fazrul explained.
Among those called up are seven players who recently featured for the senior Women’s National Team at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers in Jordan – Qarissa Putri, Natasha Naszri, Nurzaherra Maisarah, Yasmine Zaharin, Cara Chang, Kyra Taylor, and Chloe Koh. Their experience at the senior level will be vital in anchoring a squad featuring a number of fresh faces.
Complementing the seven are four players who starred in the recently concluded inaugural Girls’ Lion City Cup competition – Liyana Rickit, Chantale Lamasan, Seri Nurinsyirah, and Yuvika Suresh – all earning their first U20 call-ups. The quartet are also this year’s Unleash The Roar! (UTR) scholarship recipients, set to continue their football development at the IMG Academy in the United States later this year.
“There are a few exciting new faces joining us, some getting their first taste of a full national setup. It’s a great opportunity for them to learn and show what they can offer at this level,” said Fazrul, a former Singapore international.
His squad will be captained by Lion City Sailors’ midfielder Sarah Zu’risqha.
“Preparations have been positive. Now that the full squad is together, we’re focused on building structure, improving match sharpness, and making sure everyone understands our style and expectations,” said Fazrul. “The emphasis right now is on connection, clarity, and intensity – and we’re heading in the right direction.”
Fazrul noted the team has been improving tactically, with better teamwork between the midfield and forwards, more confident defending, and clearer communication across the pitch. Off the field, there’s been strong team spirit, with the players encouraging each other, working hard, and building close friendships.
“Our goal is to compete with pride and purpose, but also to help create a moment for women’s football. This generation of players is the future of the game, and this tournament is a platform for them to show what they’re capable of” he said.
“We want to inspire belief not just in ourselves, but in what’s possible for the women’s game here moving forward.”
Singapore will kick off their campaign against hosts Vietnam on 6 August at 9pm (all times in SGT), followed by fixtures against Kyrgyz Republic on 8 August at 6pm and Hong Kong, China on 10 August at 6pm. All matches will be held at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Centre in Hanoi.
All games will be livestreamed on the Vietnam Football Federation’s official YouTube channel.
