A Singaporean man has been charged with illegally accessing NTUC FairPrice online accounts following his deportation from Thailand.
The 34-year-old, identified as Ong Jian Zhen, appeared in court on 26 August, facing allegations of hacking customer accounts between July and November 2022.
The number of accounts compromised was not disclosed in the charge sheet.
According to police, multiple reports of compromised NTUC FairPrice and Zalora accounts emerged during that period.
Fraudulent purchases amounting to at least S$25,000 were allegedly made.
Ong is accused of working with at least six accomplices.
Ong was arrested upon his return to Singapore on 25 August after being deported from Thailand.
He has been remanded, with permission granted for him to be taken out of prison for further investigations. His next court mention has been scheduled for 2 September.
This is not Ong’s first encounter with the law.
He was previously charged with cheating in October 2021 but failed to attend subsequent hearings.
A warrant of arrest was issued in September 2022 after he skipped bail.
Police said they worked with foreign law enforcement counterparts to trace his movements.
Ong was arrested in Thailand in October 2022 and jailed there for drug-related and immigration offences.
He was released from Thai prison on 30 July and placed in an immigration detention centre before being deported to Singapore on 25 August.
If convicted of the hacking offences, Ong faces a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to S$5,000, or both.
