Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on 10 September strongly condemned Israel’s air strikes in Doha, describing them as an “egregious and dangerous action” and a violation of Qatar’s sovereignty.
The MFA said the strike undermined ongoing efforts to negotiate a ceasefire and secure the release of hostages in Gaza.
“Singapore stands in solidarity with Qatar,” the statement added, underscoring the country’s support for mediation initiatives.
Israel said the operation, conducted on 9 September, targeted senior Hamas leaders.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office declared it was “a wholly independent Israeli operation”, stating: “Israel initiated it, Israel conducted it, and Israel takes full responsibility.”
Qatar denounced the attack as a “cowardly” violation of international law.
The Gulf state has hosted Hamas political leaders and served as a mediator in ceasefire talks alongside Egypt.
Its role is further highlighted by the presence of al-Udeid Air Base, the largest United States military facility in the Middle East.
International condemnation was swift.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the strike a “flagrant violation of sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Qatar”.
He urged all parties to focus on securing a permanent ceasefire instead of escalating tensions.
United States President Donald Trump expressed rare disapproval of Israel’s military action.
He said he was “not thrilled” by the operation, stressing it “does not advance Israel’s or America’s goals”.
While reaffirming that eliminating Hamas was an important objective, he warned the strike risked undermining broader strategic efforts.
Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and the European Union also condemned the attack, warning it could inflame instability in the region.
In Singapore, the embassy in Doha issued an advisory urging Singaporeans to exercise caution, avoid crowded areas, and register with MFA’s e-register system to facilitate contact in case of emergencies.
Observers have warned that the strikes could derail fragile ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas, which have faced repeated setbacks.
With mediation efforts under pressure, Qatar now confronts heightened security concerns on its own territory while continuing to play a pivotal role in negotiations.
