Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera is back in Singapore at the Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands from 9 May to 22 June. This must be the fifth or so time I have watched this iconic musical, but there’s always something undeniably stirring about watching it unfold live once again.
This production, part of its current international tour, brings together a cast of 37 performers from around the globe, including talents from the United States, South Africa, Australia, and beyond:
Leading the cast is South African theatre actor, Jonathan Roxmouth as the titular Phantom. Roxmouth, celebrated for his portrayal of the Phantom in previous productions, delivers a performance that captures the character’s complexity, blending menace with vulnerability. His baritone voice resonates powerfully, especially in classic numbers like The Music of the Night, conveying the Phantom’s deep longing and torment.
Opposite him, Grace Roberts takes on the role of Christine Daaé. Roberts, who spent her formative years in Singapore, brings a personal touch to the role. Her soprano voice soars in pieces like Think of Me, and her portrayal captures Christine’s innocence and inner conflict as she navigates the affections of both the Phantom and Raoul.
Matt Leisy’s Raoul offers a grounded counterpoint to the Phantom’s intensity. His chemistry with Roberts provides a believable romantic subplot, though most will probably find the dynamic between Christine and the Phantom more compelling.
Visually the show is as lavish as ever.
The sets are richly detailed and the costumes are stunning, featuring over 230 in total. The masquerade scene in particular is a burst of colour and sound that drew audible gasps from the crowd.
The live orchestra definitely does justice to Webber’s score and hearing those familiar notes played live again felt a little like coming home.
Overall, this iteration of The Phantom of the Opera offers a blend of the familiar and the fresh, honouring the musical’s legacy while introducing new interpretations. For both longtime aficionados and newcomers, the production provides an opportunity to experience the timeless tale of love, obsession, and music in a live setting.
