Tanyu (探鱼), the popular grilled fish specialist from China, has reopened its flagship outlet at 313@Somerset with a fresh new concept that goes beyond its signature dish.

While the brand is famous for its Grilled Fish with Fresh Green Pepper, the latest draw is Singapore’s first self-pick chinese skewer experience. Earlier last week, we explored a range of their new offerings, focusing on non and less spicy items that were still flavourful without overwhelming heat.

The interactive skewer station is one of the key highlights, where diners can choose from over 40 freshly grilled skewers displayed in a colourful array.

We sampled several from the tasting menu, all of which were well executed.

The Crispy Fish Skewers offered a delightful crunch with tender fish inside.

The Squid skewer was pleasantly smoky and bouncy, while the Black Pork Belly was tender and well seasoned with a little spice.

For those who enjoy robust flavours without chili, the Black Pepper Beef Rib with Bell Peppers delivered a smoky, peppery punch, and the Teriyaki Chicken Thigh with Green Onion was juicy and savoury sweet.

For vegetable, we enjoyed the Grilled Leek, a favourite of mine.

For sharing, the Foil Grilled Stingray in the Fresh Green Pepper version, was aromatic and tender, a clever Chinese take on a local favourite.

Since we were avoiding heat, for the main grilled fish dish, we opted for the Garlic Grilled Fish with Jumbo Eggplant instead of the more peppery grilled fish options that Tanyu is best known for.

The portion was substantial and perfect for sharing, with fragrant garlic infusing the tender fish and soft eggplant. There are also luncheon meat, enoki mushroom and lotus root that are added beneath the fish to ensure you leave with a full stomach.

Among the new stir fries, the Fiery Chicken with Green Peppers was approached with caution, but its heat level was still borderline manageable for us, offering more aroma than intense spiciness.

We rounded up the meal with another fiery dish, the Dried Chilli Bullfrog. This is really spicy, but addictive. Approach with even more caution if you are not used to spicy food.

We also enjoyed the Double Taste Rice Cake, a chewy, slightly sweet snack, and the Chinese Style Mixed Vegetable for a fresh balance.

To drink, the Special Pineapple Jumbo Cocktail was a refreshing, shareable tropical brew that paired well with the grilled items.

The overall experience was engaging and social.

Watching skewers grilled to order at the open station adds a lively atmosphere, making Tanyu a great place to hang out with friends. The skewers were the highlight of our meal, and we would gladly return just for those.
