Google’s new Pixel 10 series has arrived, and while it is not a huge reinvention, it is a solid step forward for the brand, compared to titan Apple’s lacklustre innovation over the past few iPhone launches.

In the world of smartphones, the “XL” moniker has often simply meant a bigger screen. With the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL, however, it signifies something far more ambitious: the culmination of Google’s hardware and software vision, offering an experience that feels both expansive and exquisitely refined.

After the Made by Google 2025 event, the question was whether the Pro XL could truly compete with the established titans of the mobile world. The answer, it seems, is a resounding yes.

The phone is powered by the new Tensor G5 chip, designed less for raw speed and more for smarter AI features. Slick AI features like Magic Cue, which shows you the information you need at the right time, and Camera Coach, which helps you take better photos, make the experience feel more personalised. By building a phone that is helpful rather than flashy, Google is hitting all the right notes and on brand with what Google stands for. The Tensor G5, coupled with the latest Gemini Nano, transforms the phone from a tool into an intelligent companion.

Design-wise, it still looks like a Pixel, with the signature camera bar at the back, but with slightly softer edges and new colours like Ultra Blue and Iris.

The big news this year is that even the standard Pixel 10 now comes with a 5× telephoto zoom lens, which was previously only on the Pro models. This makes it much more versatile for photos, whether you are snapping food at a hawker centre or a skyline shot of Singapore’s cityscape.

The display is brighter and smoother than before, which is handy under strong sunlight. The camera performance is excellent overall, with natural colours and great low-light shots, though some rivals still offer more advanced manual settings if you want full control.

Battery life is a cornerstone of the Pro XL experience. The larger chassis accommodates a cell that easily powers through a heavy day of use, including video calls, navigation, photography, and streaming. For most users, it is a solid day-and-a-half phone, finally putting to rest the battery anxiety that sometimes accompanied earlier power-hungry flagships.

On the software side, Pixel phones continue to shine. You get a clean version of Android, 7 years of updates, and deep AI integration. Compared to the AI features for most other recent phone launches, Pixel’s AI features are the clear winner and Google is on to something here, integrating AI into everyday use.

If you like the Pixel’s simple design, great cameras, and Google’s AI features, it is a very solid option at a reasonable price. It feels smarter and more useful than before, especially with the new zoom lens. Priced from S$1,739, the Pixel 10 Pro XL is positioned firmly at the summit of the market with other flagship models. It is a significant investment, but one that feels justified.

Overall, the Pixel 10 Pro XL is not a radical new phone, but it is the best and smartest Pixel yet, and for most users, it is more than enough.
