[Review] Be Our Guest to a Night of Enchantment with Disney’s Beauty and the Beast in Singapore This December

There is something quietly powerful about watching Beauty and the Beast unfold live on stage.

Even if you know the story by heart, the moment the curtains rise, it feels as though you are experiencing the magic anew.

Based on Disney’s 1991 animated classic, Beauty and the Beast first debuted on Broadway in 1994, where it ran for over 13 years and toured 37 countries worldwide. More than 25 years on, this reimagined Disney-produced musical arrives in Singapore for its Asia premiere.

From the outset, the production strikes a thoughtful balance between nostalgia and reinvention. Iconic songs such as Belle, Gaston, Be Our Guest and the beloved title number remain instantly recognisable, yet they are elevated through refreshed set designs, detailed costumes and seamless stage technology that bring the enchanted castle vividly to life.

What stands out is how intentionally the world of the story is built. The sets move fluidly between Belle’s provincial town and the Beast’s castle, using layered backdrops, lighting and subtle movement to create depth without overwhelming the stage.

Costume design is where the show really comes alive. With hundreds of costumes and wigs woven into the production, every character feels thoughtfully crafted. The enchanted objects in particular are a joy to watch as they were whimsical yet refined, providing that magical touch that delights an audience.

One of the most memorable moments of the night is Be Our Guest. The number is a vibrant feast of colour, movement and theatrical precision. Within this single segment alone, the ensemble changes costumes four times, each transformation unfolding seamlessly on stage. The choreography fills the space with energy, while clever staging and lighting make the scene feel grand and immersive.

Gaston’s musical number is another highlight of the musical. Set against a lively tavern backdrop, the scene leans fully into spectacle. Bold staging, tight choreography and exaggerated physicality perfectly capture Gaston’s swagger and larger-than-life persona, making it both entertaining and memorable.

Beyond the sets and costumes, it is the production’s stage effects and quick changes that elevate the experience into something truly magical. One of the most striking moments comes early on, when the Prince is transformed into the Beast. Through precise lighting cues, layered projections and rapid costume transitions, the transformation unfolds right before your eyes, setting the tone for the wonder that follows.

That sense of theatrical magic comes full circle in the final moments of the show. When true love ultimately breaks the spell, the Beast’s return to human form is handled with breathtaking finesse. The effects are seamless and emotionally charged, enhanced by soft lighting and carefully timed movement that make the moment feel intimate rather than overblown.

Anchoring all of this are the performances themselves. Vocals are consistently strong and expressive, while subtle facial expressions and physical nuance add emotional depth, allowing the characters to feel deeply human beneath the fairytale surface.

In addition to the magical performances, audiences can enjoy a host of special activities and exclusive privileges throughout the Singapore season. Travellers passing through Changi Airport Terminal 2 can admire Belle’s iconic yellow gown on display in the Arrivals Hall from 11 December to 4 January, adding a touch of enchantment to their journey.
