Red Dot United (RDU) has launched a new initiative called AltGovSG.Online, presented on 4 Sept, a day before the opening of the new Parliament following GE2025.

The platform, described as a “Parliament Watch” effort, is designed to scrutinise government policies and propose evidence-based alternatives.

According to the party, this marks a step towards demonstrating that Singapore’s Opposition can be credible, constructive, and ready to govern.

RDU Secretary-General Ravi Philemon in a statement argued that Singapore must move beyond what he termed “checks-and-balances politics.”

“A shift from checks and balances politics”

He said this approach had locked the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) in power while preventing real political change.

“When politics is managed to keep the ruling party safe, bold solutions are slowed or blunted. Everyday Singaporeans end up paying the price, in higher costs, heavier stress, and fewer channels to demand real change,” he stated.

Philemon highlighted findings from the recent Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) surveys, which reflected dissatisfaction over cost of living, housing, and jobs.

He argued that the checks-and-balances model allowed such concerns to be managed with “tweaks at the edges” instead of meaningful reform.

“The result is predictable: if the call is only for more voices and never for a different government, voters fall back on the PAP’s candidate quality and brand. Scandals or failures seldom shake its rule, they just get absorbed,” he said.

Launch timed to coincide with new Parliament

The timing of the platform was deliberate.

According to RDU, AltGovSG.Online was introduced one day before the new Parliament’s first sitting to signal that the Opposition intends to track the new legislative term from the outset.

The platform has been in preparation for several months and is supported by a professional Secretariat.

Its work will be systematic rather than ad hoc, ensuring policy monitoring is sustainable over time.

Focus on social policies at launch

The first shadow portfolio will be Social Policies, led by Philemon himself in his role as Shadow Coordinating Minister for Social Policies.

Supported by a dedicated Secretariat, his team will begin by scrutinising policies on student safety and anti-bullying in schools, youth employment, the fair treatment of hawkers, and the wellbeing of gig workers.

These areas, according to RDU, were selected because they touch directly on everyday Singaporean concerns.

Philemon said: “This launch is not just about a website. It is about showing Singaporeans that credible, responsible, and constructive alternatives exist outside the ruling party. Our people deserve an Opposition that is not only vocal but also prepared to govern.”

Critique of media response

Philemon also noted that while the media had been invited to the event, most outlets did not attend.

He described this as “telling in a country where mainstream media is tightly co-opted and rarely shines a light on alternative efforts.”

He urged Singaporeans to rely on community sharing and direct engagement with the platform to ensure its work reaches the public.

Long-term vision of AltGovSG.Online

While RDU is serving as trustee in the early phase, the long-term vision is for AltGovSG.Online to be a shared platform.

It aims to include other opposition parties, civil society groups, and grassroots independents who share its principles.

Future expansions include shadowing other Coordinating Ministers’ portfolios and appointing a Shadow Minister for Muslim Affairs to strengthen representation and inclusion.

Philemon emphasised that AltGovSG.Online is not meant to be symbolic. Instead, it seeks to give Singaporeans the confidence that if needed, an alternative government will be responsible and ready to lead.

Invitation to the public

The platform has opened channels for public participation.

Singaporeans are encouraged to follow policy updates, join focus group discussions, attend forums, and provide feedback on policy alternatives.

Philemon said: “Our vision is simple: to give Singaporeans the confidence that if the time comes, there will be a responsible alternative government ready to take the country forward.”
