PSP to field top leaders in West Coast-Jurong West GRC in GE2025 rematch with PAP

Date:

Box 1

The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) will field its three senior leaders in the newly constituted West Coast-Jurong West Group Representation Constituency (GRC) for the upcoming General Election on 3 May, 2025.

Box 2

PSP chairman Tan Cheng Bok, 84, secretary-general Leong Mun Wai, 65, and vice-chair Hazel Poa, 54, will be joined by two new faces: Sumarleki Amjah, 53, and Sani Ismail, 49.

This marks the second time the PSP leadership team will contest this constituency. In the 2020 General Election, they narrowly lost in the then-West Coast GRC, securing 48.32 percent of the vote against the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) 51.68 percent.

Following their strong showing in 2020, Poa and Leong were appointed Non-Constituency Members of Parliament (NCMPs), giving them a platform in the legislature despite the loss.

Box 3

The latest candidate slate was revealed by Dr Tan during a media event held at Taman Jurong Market & Food Centre on 20 April.

The newly redrawn West Coast-Jurong West GRC will be a five-member constituency, formed after the electoral boundary changes announced on 11 March.

The GRC now includes parts of the former Jurong GRC and will have 158,581 voters, up from 146,089 in 2020.

Box 4

Areas such as HarbourFront and Sentosa have been shifted to the new Radin Mas SMC, while Dover and Telok Blangah have been moved to Tanjong Pagar GRC.

The PAP team in West Coast-Jurong West GRC will be led by Minister for National Development Desmond Lee.

He replaces former Transport Minister S. Iswaran, who anchored the PAP slate in the 2020 General Election but resigned from Cabinet and Parliament in 2024. His departure followed a corruption probe, after which he pleaded guilty to multiple charges.

Lee will be joined by three-term MP Ang Wei Neng, 58, and Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Finance and Education Shawn Huang, 42.

Two new PAP candidates round out the team: Dr Hamid Razak, a 39-year-old orthopaedic surgeon, and Cassandra Lee, a 33-year-old lawyer.

Stephanie Tan and Dr Tan Cheng Bock

In addition to the GRC contest, the PSP will also field 37-year-old Stephanie Tan in Pioneer Single Member Constituency (SMC). Tan, a homemaker with a law degree from the National University of Singapore, is expected to face off against PAP incumbent Patrick Tay.

Sumarleki Amjah, one of PSP’s new GRC candidates, previously volunteered with the Workers’ Party and currently heads the packaged food and business development division at Del Monte Pacific.

Sani Ismail is an in-house legal counsel and has been actively seen on the ground during PSP walkabouts in the constituency.

Dr Tan, who served as a PAP MP for Ayer Rajah from 1980 to 2006 before founding the PSP, continues to play a leading role in shaping the party’s electoral strategy.

With the General Election approaching, the contest in West Coast-Jurong West GRC is being closely watched as one of the key battlegrounds. The PSP’s strong prior performance and prominent candidates suggest a competitive race.
