The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) stepped up its ground efforts in the Chua Chu Kang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) on 30 March 2025, conducting a large-scale door-to-door outreach in the Keat Hong area.
Led by party members Phang Yew Huat, S Nallakaruppan, and Wendy Low, the team was supported by around 20 volunteers and members.
Over the course of the day, they visited 21 Housing Board blocks, distributing flyers and engaging residents on national and local issues.
According to Nallakaruppan, the outreach covered an estimated 2,100 households, marking what he described as a record turnout for the party in the area. He commended the volunteers for their commitment and dedication.
Phang, who has been active in Chua Chu Kang since 2020, said he has maintained consistent engagement with residents over the past five years.
He described his role to the Straits Times as ongoing and noted that the party would determine the final slate of candidates for the GRC.
Low, who has been conducting similar outreach in Brickland, said her focus has been on engaging families in four- and five-room flats. Cost-of-living pressures remain a key concern raised by residents, she added.
Both Phang and Low were involved in the 2020 General Election, with Phang serving as election agent in Chua Chu Kang GRC and Low contesting in Tanjong Pagar GRC.
Other PSP members have also been active in the broader western region. Among them is Lawrence Pek, former secretary-general of the Singapore Manufacturing Federation, who has focused on Tengah—a new residential town that will be merged into Chua Chu Kang GRC following electoral boundary adjustments.
Pek began volunteering in 2023 and has since made multiple visits to the estate, particularly in areas like Plantation Plaza.
He noted that many Tengah residents are young families facing early settlement issues, including limited transport and technical problems with the centralised cooling system.
He said his team has been helping residents understand how to provide feedback to relevant authorities, including channels available for municipal and service issues.
Based on 2024 electoral figures, it is estimated that Tengah houses about 10 per cent of Chua Chu Kang GRC’s electorate, which totals approximately 93,000 voters.
According to the Housing Board, nearly 8,000 households had collected their keys in Tengah by November 2024.
At the last General Election in 2020, the People’s Action Party (PAP) secured Chua Chu Kang GRC with 58.64 per cent of the vote, down from 76.89 per cent in 2015. PSP’s performance in the constituency was its third strongest nationwide.
As the party intensifies pre-election activity, its volunteers continue to operate in a politically charged environment.
In January 2025, PSP volunteers were involved in an incident with PAP volunteers during a walkabout in Bukit Gombak, which led to police investigations. While the case has been referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers, no public update has been issued to date.
Despite these challenges, the party’s ground presence has remained steady, with multiple walkabouts and outreach initiatives reported across western Singapore in recent months.
PSP has not yet confirmed its candidates for Chua Chu Kang GRC. However, the increased activity suggests preparations are well underway for the next General Election, which is speculated to be held in early May.
