SINGAPORE: President Tharman Shanmugaratnam expressed full confidence in Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and his newly sworn-in Cabinet during a formal ceremony held at the Istana on 23 May 2025.
Speaking to over 600 guests gathered on the Istana lawn, Tharman described the 2025 General Election (GE2025) as “profoundly important,” marking the first time the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) contested under Wong’s leadership.
Tharman highlighted the PAP’s improved vote share in GE2025, bucking the usual post-leadership transition trend, and credited the electorate for maintaining decorum and mutual respect throughout the campaign.
He noted that the election saw a significant shift in demographics, with many younger voters participating who did not live through Singapore’s earlier nation-building years.
“These younger voters have their own concerns and carry their own aspirations for what Singapore can become,” he said.
According to Tharman, the election was more than a routine selection of representatives.
“Singaporeans were choosing not just their Members of Parliament or town councillors, but also the political leadership who will write the next chapter of the Singapore story with them,” he said.
Campaign debates focused on pressing issues, including the cost of living, employment, housing, immigration, and Singapore’s response to global changes.
Beyond policy matters, voters expressed preferences for a political landscape that balances strong leadership with diverse voices in Parliament.
“They preferred the strongest team possible to govern Singapore, even as they chose to maintain alternative voices in Parliament,” Tharman observed.
He praised Singaporeans for upholding a tone of mutual respect and resisting the politicisation of race and religion, while standing firm against foreign interference.
“Singaporeans showed that while we may hold different views, we are all fellow citizens who want the best for our nation,” he said.
Tharman emphasised that the election outcome sent a “strong signal” internationally of Singapore’s unity and collective resolve.
He warned, however, that the world is entering “uncharted waters” amid intensifying geopolitical rivalries, a fragmented global economy, and declining multilateralism.
“Narrower, more nationalistic and opportunistic approaches to trade and diplomacy are taking hold,” he cautioned.
As a small state, Singapore would be acutely affected by this global instability, and must find ways to preserve autonomy and cohesion.
“There is no telling whether this global disorder will eventually subside. But there is no returning to the world we knew over our first 60 years of nationhood.”
Domestically, Tharman said Singapore must confront long-term challenges with clarity and boldness, particularly the implications of an ageing population.
This demographic shift will reshape the workforce, healthcare, and neighbourhood life, requiring thoughtful adjustments across sectors.
He called for creative investments in education, skills training and lifelong learning, to ensure every Singaporean can succeed and contribute.
On the political front, Tharman praised both ruling and opposition parties, and individual candidates who demonstrated courage and commitment during the campaign.
“They committed their time, energy, and ideas; and courageously opened themselves to public scrutiny,” he said.
The new Cabinet, Tharman said, has a strong mix of experienced leaders and fresh faces. He commended their resilience and competence, especially in crisis management.
“They have been tested in crises, and shown their ability to govern with integrity, empathy and courage,” he said.
Wong was specifically lauded for his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Forward Singapore initiative, which helped chart future directions through public engagement.
“He has shown calm and confident leadership… and now, in reinforcing the trust of Singapore’s partners in these uncertain times,” Tharman added.
He urged all newly elected and returning parliamentarians to uphold their “solemn responsibility” with integrity and dedication, regardless of political affiliation.
“Argue your case vigorously, but never compromise on honesty and integrity. Critique policies robustly, but also offer alternatives,” he said.
Tharman concluded by encouraging national unity and collaboration across society.
“Now that the elections are over, Singaporeans should work together with the government of the day for a brighter future.”
He affirmed his readiness to work alongside Wong’s team to uphold the Constitution and safeguard the interests of all Singaporeans.
“I have full confidence in Prime Minister Wong and his team,” Tharman stated. “As president, I stand ready to work with them.”
