SINGAPORE: The Singapore Police Force (SPF) is investigating a 48-year-old man after his two children, both under the age of 16, were allegedly involved in distributing political flyers in Punggol.

The incident came to light following a Reddit post on 28 April, in which a resident shared surveillance footage of a child distributing printed materials believed to be flyers from the People’s Action Party (PAP).

The resident explained that they reviewed the footage after discovering their bicycle, which had been parked outside their flat, had been damaged by a child seen playing while distributing the flyers.

The video showed a young girl carrying a stack of printed papers, pushing a boy aside before approaching neighbouring units and inserting the materials into their gate grilles.

In the post, the resident raised concerns, questioning whether the PAP was “deploying kids to distribute their flyers,” suggesting that the materials were of a political nature.

It is worth noting that under Section 83(1)(a) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, individuals under the age of 16 are prohibited from engaging in election-related activities.

In response to media queries, the SPF and the Elections Department (ELD) confirmed that a police report was filed on 28 April.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had been distributing election-related flyers accompanied by his two children.

The authorities stated that the man claimed he did not want to leave his children at home unattended and was unaware that involving them in such activities could be an offence.

Police investigations are ongoing.

The ELD also added that it had advised the relevant political party on 29 April to remind its members of the legal provisions surrounding campaign activities.
