The Singapore Men’s National Team will first host Maldives at the Bishan Stadium in a friendly match on 5 June before they make the trip to Bangladesh for Matchday 2 in Group C.

Ogura is relishing the opportunity for his team to feature in front of home fans first before setting off on the important Asian Cup qualifiers clash against Bangladesh.

“It is always a treat to play football at home and in front of our fans. The fans give the team an extra push and it will allow our Lions to build rhythm and confidence for the Bangladesh match,” said the Head Coach of the Singapore Men’s National Team.

“Last year, we didn’t get many chances to play at home so we’re really looking forward to play any chance that we get.”

The June international window takes place right after the conclusion of the domestic football season.

May marks the most exciting month in the local football calendar. The Singapore Premier League (SPL) season concludes on 25 May about a week before the Singapore Cup final on 31 May.

Just last Sunday, Singapore football witnessed a historic moment as the Lion City Sailors lined up against United Arab Emirates’ side Sharjah FC in the AFC Champions League 2 (ACL2) final.

The Sailors fell 2-1 to Sharjah in the final but the club can take pride in becoming the first Singaporean side to play in a major continental club competition; and it was also the first time a match of such magnitude was hosted on local soil – at Bishan Stadium.

“The Sailors have done Singapore proud. I hope their journey inspires, not just their team, but other players, our fans and the future generation,” said Ogura.

“I hope it raises the spirits, levels and performances of everyone as our National Team strive to make our own mark in Asia.”

With a slew of games coming thick and fast in a frenetic close to the domestic season, Ogura has much to think about before he selects his squad, but his technical team are prepared for any scenario.

“With a demanding schedule and a lot at stake in club football, we must be mindful of player workload and potential injuries. We’re monitoring every single game closely and will be ready with options,” said Ogura.

“The depth in local football is growing and that gives me confidence to adapt if necessary.”
