A mother has come forward with serious allegations regarding the Montfort Secondary School bullying incident that surfaced in a viral video. She claims that her son was not only bullied but also physically assaulted in an earlier attack that was not recorded.
In the video, a group of students can be seen following the victim. Shouts of encouragement can be heard in the background, including one student urging, “Faster, faster.”
One of the students then runs forward and wrestles the victim to the ground, while another kicks him. The group behind the camera can be heard cheering.
As the victim gets up and continues walking, the same student who pushed him earlier catches up and shoves him down again. Despite falling, the victim manages to get back on his feet.
The viral Facebook post was later removed from public view at 11 pm on Sunday, 23 February, after being viewed over a million times and shared more than 10,000 times. However, discussions continued across various social media platforms.
The mother, Joleen Wee, a single parent, shared a Facebook post on Sunday night, stating that the circulating video was “just part 2 of the entire incident.”
She alleged that before the recorded attack, her son had been strangled and beaten by a group of boys in a school stairwell.
She shared images showing deep strangulation marks on his neck, questioning the amount of force used and calling the incident “attempted homicide.”
She wrote, “I don’t want the authorities to downplay the severity of the incident and handle it insensitively.
I don’t want diplomatically correct answers like, ‘The students have acknowledged that their behaviours were wrong and have expressed remorse!’ I demand to know what actions have been taken.”
Wee added that she has taken her son to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital for medical evaluation and has filed a police report.
Her post, which had been shared over 1,600 times and received more than 400 comments as of Monday at 11 am, drew widespread public reaction.
Many users expressed outrage and support for the mother, with some comparing the case to previous bullying incidents at Admiralty Secondary School, one of which resulted in a serious injury and another in a student’s death due to alleged depression over her experience being bullied.
One commenter wrote, “My heart breaks watching this. I hope your son is coping well, and that the authorities take action to ensure these bullies face consequences for their unacceptable behaviour. Sending you love and virtual support too as it’s definitely not easy for you.”
Another user questioned the effectiveness of anti-bullying measures, saying, “The school and government need to take this seriously. This is not the first time, and it seems to be happening in schools regularly. Maybe we need police patrols in schools—this is gangster behaviour.”
Some expressed frustration with the education system, with one remarking, “Last time, my discipline master would whack the boys upside down during school assembly and give them detention for months. Now, sorry… Parents of the bully will go report to the MP and MOE. What a failed system we have now.”
Others demanded stronger punishment for the perpetrators. One person wrote, “Being young doesn’t mean they do not need to be punished. They should be held responsible for what they did to your child. Be strong, I know it’s not easy as a single mother, but keep fighting for justice.”
Another raised political concerns, stating, “Election is coming soon. If the government wants to keep their position, then do something about this. Our generation may not be around long enough to help you keep the seats, but these kids will grow up. They are the ones who will decide the government’s fate.”
There were also calls for legal action, with one commenter urging, “I strongly agree with you. Just go for legal action against them. Keep us updated on what punishment these kids receive, since MOE just keeps saying they will take disciplinary action, but nothing seems to change.”
School’s reaction
Montfort Secondary School’s vice-principal, Wilson Tay, stated to local media that the school is aware of the incident and has taken disciplinary action against the students involved.
He reiterated that the school has a zero-tolerance policy for bullying and violence and is committed to providing a safe learning environment for all students.
Tay added that the students involved had been counselled, have acknowledged their misconduct, and have expressed remorse.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education (MOE) has yet to make a direct statement on the matter, but Education Minister Chan Chun Sing has previously addressed school bullying incidents.
In February, he stated that parents should allow schools and authorities to handle cases rather than intervening. He also previously commented on a separate case, warning against retaliatory behaviour, stating, “We must also be careful not to bully the bully.”
““No one should be bullied, no one wants to be bullied, and no one should bully,” said Chan.
The police have confirmed with local media that a report has been filed and that they are looking into the matter.
With the victim’s mother now reserving her right to take legal action, public pressure continues to mount on the school and authorities to provide clearer answers and more decisive actions in addressing the incident.
