Residents of Ang Mo Kio will soon benefit from more sheltered linkways and a new bus service, 138M, as part of estate enhancements announced on 15 March 2025.
The announcement comes as Singapore enters a heated political period, following the release of the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) report on 11 March. With the dissolution of Parliament anticipated soon and elections widely expected in May, the timing of these estate upgrades has drawn attention.
Speaking at the Ang Mo Kio Town Council Masterplan launch exhibition, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong outlined ongoing efforts to improve the town’s infrastructure and amenities.
One of the key additions is bus service 138M, which was launched on the same morning and aims to provide residents—especially seniors and those with mobility challenges—with a more convenient transport option to Ang Mo Kio Polyclinic.
The loop service will operate from Ang Mo Kio bus interchange, stopping at the bus stop nearest to the polyclinic without requiring commuters to cross the road. According to SBS Transit, it will run every 30 minutes.
“Our residents have been waiting for this for a long time, we’ve pushed hard for it, finally we’ve got it and I’m glad it’s here,” said SM Lee.
Beyond the new bus service, Ang Mo Kio will see an expansion of sheltered linkways, providing commuters with better protection against the elements.
The town will also introduce more senior-friendly upgrades, including the Silver Upgrading Programme, which will be rolled out in four precincts in Chong Boon.
The event was attended by several MPs, including Darryl David, Gan Thiam Poh, and Nadia Samdin from Ang Mo Kio GRC, as well as Henry Kwek, MP for Kebun Baru SMC, and Yip Hon Weng, MP for Yio Chu Kang SMC.

In a media release, Ang Mo Kio Town Council (AMKTC) stated that it has worked closely with government agencies and community partners over the past five years to implement improvements across the town’s seven divisions.
Moving forward, the council will continue to focus on supporting seniors and young families, fostering inclusivity, and enhancing sustainability.
Reflecting on Ang Mo Kio’s transformation, SM Lee recalled how the town has evolved from a young housing estate with limited amenities to a well-developed and connected community.
“When I first became an MP here in Teck Ghee 40 years ago, Ang Mo Kio was still quite a young new town,” he said.
“Many families had only recently moved into newly-built HDB flats, young couples (with) little kids. There were not so many amenities. But year by year, we built up Ang Mo Kio into the bustling town it is today.”
Since his first election as MP for Teck Ghee SMC in 1984, SM Lee has represented the Teck Ghee ward under Ang Mo Kio GRC following the SMC’s dissolution in 1991.
The latest town upgrades are said to be a part of ongoing efforts to enhance liveability, accessibility, and comfort for Ang Mo Kio residents.
However, the timing of the announcement coincides with growing speculation over the general election, expected to be called in the coming months.
With Singaporeans awaiting the dissolution of Parliament, such estate enhancements may be seen in the broader context of election readiness and voter engagement—or as timely “carrot handouts” ahead of the anticipated polls.
