Box 4

Shakira in action for the Sailors.

The Lion City Sailors head into Friday’s clash with Albirex Jurong level on 15 points after five consecutive wins, though currently sit second in the WPL on goal difference. Albirex, meanwhile, have matched that consistency and currently top the table, meaning a win for either side could prove decisive in establishing early-season momentum at the summit of the league.

The rivalry between the two clubs has been closely contested in recent years. In their last five meetings, the Sailors have lost only once, highlighting how marginal the margins can be between these sides. Both teams have also demonstrated defensive solidity: Albirex have kept four clean sheets so far, while the Sailors have maintained a five-match streak without conceding, with 18-year-old goalkeeper Izairida Shakira standing out as a key figure for the Sailors.

On the attacking front, Albirex’s Japanese trio – current league top scorer with 20 goals, Ruriko Takashima, Kana Kitahara and Manami Fukuzawa – to provide a potent forward threat, supported by midfielders Sitianiwati Rosielin and Siti Wan Nabilah, while the Sailors will rely on their attacking options, including Sailors’ top scorer at 15 goals Ami Takeuchi, and young talents Ain Salleh and Farah Nurzahirah, all of whom have contributed regularly to the team’s goal tally.

With both sides in strong form and boasting high-quality players across the pitch, Friday’s encounter promises to be a tightly contested fixture with significant implications for the WPL title race.

BG Tampines aim to build winning momentum in upcoming clash against Hougang

Saturday, 14 March | 7.45pm | Choa Chu Kang Stadium

Nahwah Aidilreza in action for BG Tampines.

BG Tampines Rovers head into Matchweek 7 on Saturday, 14 March, on the back of a hard-fought win over Tiong Bahru after three consecutive losses, looking to maintain momentum as they aim to climb the table. Their recent performance showed improved attacking cohesion, and sustaining that form will be key if they are to close the gap on the mid-table sides.

Claire Park in action for Hougang United.

Hougang United, meanwhile, remain at the foot of the Women’s Premier League and will be seeking to respond after a two-week break. The pause offers fresher legs and an opportunity to regroup, but Hougang will need sharper finishing and defensive discipline if they are to secure points against a revitalised Rovers side.

Tiong Bahru aim to end losing run against Geylang International

Sunday, 15 March | 7.45pm | Choa Chu Kang Stadium

Joey Cheng in action for Tiong Bahru.

Tiong Bahru face Geylang International on Sunday, 15 March, looking to end a run of two consecutive narrow losses. Their goal-scoring duo, Lim Li Xian and Nurzaherra Maisarah, will need to step up once again to spark a revival, while captain Joey Cheng, who has contributed one goal and two assists this season, will be key in creating opportunities in front of goal as they take on a fresher Eagles side.

Farhanah Ruhaizat in action for Geylang.

Naureen Qadriyah, who has scored back-to-back braces, is currently Geylang’s top scorer, while midfield veterans Farhanah Ruhaizat and Hamizah Talib provide experience and stability to control the game, as the Eagles are eager to get back on the winning track.
