Hougang United will take on Tiong Bahru this Saturday, 31 January, looking to bounce back after a heavy 12–0 defeat to Albirex Jurong last week. While the Cheetahs struggled, they showed some improvement in the second half, conceding just three goals in the second half of that match.

Tiong Bahru who did not play in the opening weekend of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), are aiming to start their campaign on a positive note. The team has improved steadily over the past two seasons, climbing from 10th in 2023 to 7th in 2025, and retaining 13 players from last year.

Lioness Lim Li Xian returns to lead the squad, bringing with her experience from 39 caps – and three goals – for Singapore. She is joined by young Lioness Nurzaherra Maisarah, who debuted for the national team at the Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers last June.

Tiong Bahru’s captain Joey Cheng in a recent training session.

Hougang will need to tighten their defence and sharpen their attack if they are to match a Tiong Bahru side blending experience with fresh talent. Both teams will be looking to settle into the new season and gain early rhythm.

The Hougang-Tiong Bahru fixture at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium, will kick off at 5pm.

Sailors set for stern Aerion test

Saturday, 31 January | 7.30pm | Choa Chu Kang Stadium

Still Aerion were unbeaten against Lion City Sailors in the 2025 Women’s Premier League (WPL) season, memorably edging the Sailors 3–2 last September. Nurul Unaisah’s late winner in that game derailed the Sailors’ title push, and the reverse fixture that ended in a draw, did enough for Aerion to leapfrog the Sailors – then defending WPL champions – into second spot.

That bit of recent history will add a dash of some fiery spice as the two teams clash for the first time this season on Saturday, 31 January at Choa Chu Kang Stadium.

The Sailors will be eager to set the record straight as they look to hold onto top spot in the 2026 season of the WPL, while third-placed Aerion – 14 goals adrift on goal difference – will push hard in what promises to be a high-intensity contest.

The Sailors will again lean on Japanese forward Ami Takeuchi, who leads the WPL scoring charts with six goals, with Eri Kitagawa, Farah Nurzahirah, Ami Kawase, Ain Salleh and Izzati Rosni adding pace and attacking threat.

Aerion’s attack is led by Thai internationals Pikul Khueanpet and Sunisa Srangthaisong. along with midfielder Mikayla Simons who has joined from Philippines club Stallion Laguna — part of the side that beat the Sailors 5-0 in last November’s AWCL group stage. Aerion have added depth in the form of Nicole Lim, Nurul Unaisah, Ayla Chin and Calista Dodson.

With firepower on both sides, goalkeepers will be under pressure, with 2025 Golden Glove winner Lutfiah Hannah and 18-year-old Sailors keeper Izairida Shakira both set to play key roles.

Albirex Jurong seek big performance against Balestier

Sunday, 1 Feb | 5pm | Choa Chu Kang Stadium

Albirex Jurong will aim to keep pace at the top of the table when they face Balestier Khalsa this Sunday, 1 February, at 5pm at Choa Chu Kang Stadium.

Albirex come into the fixture with strong recent head-to-head form against Balestier, having claimed convincing wins of 13–0 and 10–1 during the 2025 season and will be eager to build on that momentum. The White Swans are currently trailing Lion City Sailors by four goals on goal difference in the WPL standings, they will be targeting another strong attacking performance to close that gap.

Balestier arrive looking to regroup after a heavy defeat to the Sailors last week. While they showed moments of defensive aggression and effort, the Tigers will look to raise intensity and improve organisation to contain Albirex’s attacking threat.

Tanjong Pagar and Geylang look to move up the standings

Sunday, 1 Feb | 7.30pm | Choa Chu Kang Stadium

Tanjong Pagar United and Geylang International both come into Sunday’s clash looking to bounce back after suffering losses in the opening weekend of the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

Sitting just one position apart — Geylang are 6th, with Tanjong Pagar 7th — both sides will be eager to move up the nine-team WPL standings, and gain early-season momentum.

And there is reason for optimism in both camps.

In their 2-0 loss to BG Tampines Rovers, the Tanjong Pagar defence, led by players such as Nuriah Noor and Abigail Goh, showed that they were able to hold firm at times while goalkeeper Ilya Batrisyia produced some key saves.

Geylang fell 3-1 to Still Aerion in their opening fixture, with the Eagles creating chances, recorded shots on target and also found the back of the net, with goalkeeper Nurul Illyanis making important stops to keep the team in the game.

With all players available for selection Geylang and Tanjong Pagar are primed to build on positive signs this Sunday.
