MALAYSIA: A driver in Ampang is recovering from a harrowing road rage encounter near Great Eastern Mall on 25 November 2024.
The incident began when a Perodua Axia attempted to enter the driver’s lane at the traffic lights heading toward M City Condo.
According to the driver, who wishes to remain anonymous, honking to alert the Axia sparked verbal abuse from its driver and passenger.
Despite giving way to avoid confrontation, the aggression worsened as the Axia’s driver exited his vehicle and struck the driver’s side window.
Although the initial attack was not recorded, the driver captured footage of subsequent events, including the Axia’s passenger exiting the vehicle and damaging the passenger-side window.
The attack caused significant damage, estimated at nearly RM500 for the window and power window mechanism repairs. Additional costs for tinting and bodywork are still pending.
“The moment I honked, they began using profanities toward me,” the driver recounted. “I gave way to avoid trouble, but the driver got out and punched my window. Worried for my safety, I started recording until I could safely leave.”
Police told the driver that they are still investigating the incident.
However, as it is classified as road rage and not an accident, the driver cannot claim insurance for the damages.
Road rage incidents in Malaysia have raised concerns about safety and the limitations of current insurance policies in such cases.
Under Malaysian law, road rage is not treated as an insurable event unless it results in a collision.
Drivers are advised to remain vigilant and to document such incidents when safe to do so, as evidence can be crucial for police investigations.
For now, the victim in this case is left bearing the costs of repairs while awaiting further developments from the investigation.
