PUTRAJAYA, 5 June 2025: Malaysia has voiced serious dismay and disappointment over the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) continued failure to adopt resolutions demanding an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza.
According to a statement issued by the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 5 June, the repeated failures were attributed to the use of veto power by certain permanent members of the Council.
This, the ministry said, has impeded global efforts to address what it described as one of the most severe humanitarian tragedies since the Second World War.
Malaysia specifically condemned the role of the United States in the latest vote.
On 4 June, the US vetoed a draft resolution calling for an “immediate, unconditional and sustained ceasefire” in Gaza.
The draft, tabled before the 15-member Council, also sought to ensure unhindered humanitarian access to the region, which continues to suffer from a dire blockade and intense military conflict.
Malaysia denounces Israeli actions as war crimes
The Ministry’s statement strongly criticised what it termed “Zionist regime” actions, including civilian killings, genocide, and the use of starvation and aid restrictions as weapons of war.
The Foreign Ministry asserted that such actions violate international humanitarian law and must be condemned unequivocally.
It reiterated Malaysia’s longstanding stance that the only viable path to a lasting solution in the Middle East lies in the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.
This state, it said, should be based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital – a position that aligns with broad international consensus and the nation’s principled foreign policy.
The ministry further urged the international community not to be disheartened by the UNSC’s failures and to continue pursuing measures that safeguard peace, security, and humanitarian access in Gaza and across the Middle East.
International backlash against US position
In the wake of the US veto, several UNSC member states publicly criticised Washington’s position, arguing that it undermines global peace efforts and shields Israeli actions from accountability.
This was the first vote on the matter since November 2024, when a similar ceasefire push was also blocked by a US veto.
Gaza’s humanitarian crisis continues to deteriorate amid persistent airstrikes and severe restrictions on aid deliveries.
On 3 June alone, 40 bodies were reportedly brought to Gaza hospitals, while another 208 people were injured, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
The overall number of injured persons in Gaza has reached 124,901, based on figures released by the ministry.
Dr Munir al-Bursh, Director General of the Gaza Health Ministry, stated that Israel has blocked over 3,000 health aid trucks from entering the territory, worsening an already critical humanitarian situation.
Efforts by aid agencies to deliver medical supplies and food have been severely hampered, prompting repeated calls from the United Nations and other humanitarian groups for unimpeded access.
Malaysia’s call to action adds to growing international pressure on the UNSC and the broader global community to act decisively in addressing the worsening conditions in Gaza.
As civilian casualties mount and basic supplies dwindle, Malaysia stressed that sustained global attention and diplomatic engagement are necessary to end the violence and alleviate suffering.
