SINGAPORE, 21 MAY 2024 – Singapore Women’s National Team Head Coach Karim Bencherifa has announced a squad of 23 players who will travel to Indonesia, during this month’s FIFA international window for their first international match of the year.

The 137th-ranked Lionesses will be departing for Jakarta on Sunday, 26 May 2024, and will play against the Garuda Pertiwi on Tuesday, 28 May 2024 at Madya Stadium Jakarta, GBK Complex at 7pm (8pm SGT).

Singapore last faced 109th-ranked Indonesia in October 2022, resulting in a 2-1 loss for the Lionesses in a friendly match at Jalan Besar Stadium. The team’s sole victory against Indonesia came with a 2-0 win in the final group match at the AFF Women’s Championship in July 2022.

Coach Karim is looking forward to seeing his players in competitive action: “Despite past results, we’re preparing for the upcoming match with respect, thoroughness, and determination. We’re focused on learning from past games, fixing our weaknesses, adjusting tactics, and giving our best effort on the field.”

Highlighting the potential benefits of facing strong opponents like Indonesia, he added: “Playing against tough teams can really toughen our players, pushing them beyond their limits and driving them to constantly improve themselves in areas of both individual as well as teamwork growth.”

The squad largely mirrors the one from the Saudi Arabia training camp in March, with four players returning from overseas to fulfill their international duties. These players, recipients of Singapore’s overseas football scholarship launched by the national footballing project Unleash the Roar! (UTR), include Irsalina Irwan, Ardhra Arul Ganeswaran, Chloe Koh (IMG Academy, Florida), and Natasha Naszri (ESC La Liga Academy, Spain).

Key players such as Lion City Sailors’ defender Umairah Hamdan, goalkeeper Izairida Shakira, midfielder Sarah Zu’risqha, as well as Dortmund star Danelle Tan will miss out on the friendly due to school/work and club commitments.

Expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the team, Irsalina, who last joined the squad for the Asian Games campaign in September, shared her hopes of leveraging her experience at IMG Academy in Florida. “I feel incredibly grateful to be part of the squad and thankful to Coach Karim for giving me this opportunity. My time at IMG Academy has been instrumental in my physical and technical development. I hope to apply my skills effectively to contribute to the team in this match.”
