Parked in a nondescript alley just off Club Street, La Vache!, which is French for holy cow, specialises in Parisian-style steak-frites. Distinguished by its charming crimson awning and a neon cow in the window, the French bistro is a bustling, unpretentious space with a streamlined menu.
The meal kicks off with a fresh organic salad of greens and walnuts tossed in a tangy mustard vinaigrette, before the star of the show – the 10-oz USDA Double Gold ribeye served with its signature housemade béarnaise. It doesn’t really need it though; the entrecôte, having been aged for 60 days, is tender and oh-so-flavoursome. It’s accompanied by unlimited crispy fries, golden brown and redolent with beef fat and a glass of house red, if you so choose. The only bit of decision making you’ll have to do is towards the end when the dessert trolley comes around laden with pastries like profiteroles and lemon meringue pie, and gelato from the nearby Messina. Don’t overthink it – the heart wants what it wants.
