Singaporean journalist and civil society activist Kirsten Han will lead an online seminar on 25 March 2025, from 8pm to 9.30pm.
The event, titled “Another story of Singapore – Journalist Kirsten Han’s involvement and observations” (新加坡的另一個故事——記者韓俐穎的參與及觀察), will be conducted in Mandarin and hosted by Patience Chuang, chief editor of Taiwan-based SpringHill Publishing.
The seminar is free to attend, with registration required via an online form. Upon registration, participants will receive a confirmation email with the seminar link.
The discussion will explore Singapore’s reputation as a highly developed capitalist state while highlighting the challenges faced by journalists and activists.
Han will share her experiences covering issues such as transparency in capital punishment, gender diversity, and historical state violence.
She will also reflect on the scrutiny and obstacles encountered by independent journalists in Singapore, including police investigations, lawsuits, and public criticism.
Han is well known for her work in advocating for press freedom and human rights.
She is the author of The Singapore I Recognise: Essays On Home, Community And Hope, which presents an alternative narrative of Singapore through the lens of activism and independent journalism.
The book highlights perspectives from civil society that are often overlooked, discussing grassroots movements, solidarity, and empowerment.
The seminar will delve into themes from her book, offering insights into activism and journalism in Singapore.
Han will also discuss how independent reporting can shape public understanding of political and social issues.
Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with Han’s insights and ask questions about the evolving landscape of press freedom and civil society in Singapore.
