SINGAPORE: A heartwarming story unfolded when a Myanmar citizen found a lost wallet belonging to a Singaporean and went out of her way to return it.
Layeik Chyo (လရိပ် ချို), a kind-hearted Myanmar woman, shared her experience of finding and returning the lost wallet on Facebook.
On the morning of 2 February, she posted a message asking for help in locating the owner of the wallet she had found.
While on her way to work, she discovered a wallet on the road filled with cash and several bank cards.
Noticing that the wallet was open, she searched through it and found the owner’s details on the cards.
In her post, she wrote, “Please share this. On my way to work, I found a wallet on the road filled with cash, and there were also bank cards inside. I found it after noticing the wallet was open. The cards inside revealed that the owner is Chinese.”
She mentioned that she could imagine how worried the owner must have been upon realizing her wallet was missing.
Instead of keeping it, Layeik Chyo was determined to return it.
“I can imagine how worried they must be. I want to return it to them. I will return it to the name on the card,” she added.
Later that same evening, around 6 pm, she updated her post to inform her followers that she had successfully returned the wallet to its owner.
“As a Myanmar citizen, I felt so fortunate,” she wrote.
“This morning, I found the wallet and returned it to its owner. While searching through the bag, I found the missing person’s ID card, and following the details on the card, I returned it to their home.”
Layeik Chyo also shared how the owner, who was Chinese, was overwhelmed with happiness upon receiving her wallet.
“The owner was so happy to receive it that they shed tears. I felt that no matter how difficult it was, I couldn’t put a price on kindness,” she said.
She reflected on the experience, emphasizing that kindness is invaluable.
Layeik Chyo explained that she had to visit the owner’s home twice. The first time she went, no one was home, but she didn’t give up.
“The first time, no one was home, so I left,” she explained.
“On my second visit, the family sent someone to escort me.”
The owner’s family expressed their deep gratitude, with Layeik Chyo noting that they likened the event to “a prayer from a temple being answered.”
