SINGAPORE: A Sembawang resident recently posted a TikTok video questioning the People’s Action Party (PAP)’s method of political outreach, after receiving a political brochure without any direct engagement.
The video, supported by CCTV footage and an image of the flyer, prompted widespread discussion online about how political parties are approaching residents ahead of the next General Election.
The brochure featured a picture of the PAP team for Sembawang GRC, along with the slogan “Sembawang, For Everyone” on one side.
The reverse side read: “Dear resident, we came by but you were not at home. We would like to ask you for your support.”
CCTV footage showed a PAP representative, dressed in white, hanging the brochure on the door knob without attempting to knock or engage with the resident.
He then immediately left after placing the brochure.
The resident, who stated they were home the entire day, noted that there was no knock on the door.
In the caption, the resident questioned: “Is this how they do home visits? Just put this and go?” pointing out that there was no attempt to interact with them.
A similar account surfaced two days earlier on Reddit, where another resident reported finding the flyer at their door despite being home at the time.
@mofshoryuken No knock on my door. I was home the whole day. Just put this and go? Share your thoughts on this. #PAP #Vote2025 ♬ sonido original – INTROS DE SERIES, CARTOONS, TV
Public Reactions: Concerns Over Lack of Engagement
The TikTok video has since garnered over 340,000 views and 960 comments, with many residents from other constituencies sharing similar experiences.
In the comments section, several users recounted similar incidents, claiming they were also at home when PAP representatives left brochures without knocking.
Some noted that their doors were even open, yet the representatives still quietly left the materials without making contact.
Others speculated that the representatives might have avoided knocking because they were afraid of being unable to answer residents’ questions on political issues.
Several commenters criticised the approach, saying it reflected a lack of sincerity and respect towards residents.
Some suggested that the PAP had become “too complacent” in their outreach efforts.
As campaigning intensifies, voters appear increasingly attentive not just to manifestos but also to the manner in which candidates approach and engage the public.
