SINGAPORE: On 19 June 2025, Associate Professor Jamus Lim penned a heartfelt Facebook post on the transition of leadership at the Workers’ Party Youth Wing (WPYW), handing over the reins to Eileen Chong in a heartfelt Facebook post.

He described his term as a stewarding period, during which he aimed to guide young members in realising their full potential.

Assoc Prof Lim recounted his awareness from the outset that his role was a temporary one, noting with humour that at “close to 200 seasons in age”, he was not a permanent fixture.

He acknowledged the youth wing’s dedication, sharing that its members had given up countless nights and weekends to advance the Workers’ Party’s vision of a more balanced political landscape in Singapore.

“The youth of the Workers’ Party Youth Wing are cut from a different cloth,” Lim wrote, lauding their purposeful commitment and selfless energy.

Quoting Bernard Shaw, reflecting on potential

Lim opened his message with a reflection on the famous quip, “youth is wasted on the young,” often attributed to George Bernard Shaw.

He contrasted that sentiment with the efforts of the WPYW, which he said displayed none of the aimlessness the quote implies.

He praised their optimism, hard work, and vision, noting that they were channeling their youthful potential into meaningful political engagement.

Eileen Chong to lead WP Youth Wing

The leadership baton now passes to Eileen Chong, who Lim affirmed would inject “mighty fresh energy” into the youth wing.

Chong was recently announced as one of four new members co-opted into the Workers’ Party Central Executive Committee (CEC) on 18 June.

She is also set to serve as a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) in the 15th Parliament of Singapore.

Lim expressed “absolute faith” in Chong’s leadership, trusting she would guide the youth wing to “even loftier heights”.

Chong’s co-option to the CEC was announced alongside that of three other party figures.

They include Sengkang MP Abdul Muhaimin Bin Abdul Malik, who now serves as Deputy Organising Secretary; Aljunied MP Kenneth Tiong, appointed as Deputy Treasurer; and fellow NCMP Andre Low, who takes on the role of Deputy Head of the Media Team.

These appointments mark a notable step in the Workers’ Party’s ongoing efforts to rejuvenate its leadership and foster youth representation within its ranks.

As he concluded his message, Lim shared his pride in having worked closely with the WPYW and confidence in the next generation.
