UNITED STATES: Two staff members of the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC, were fatally shot outside the Capital Jewish Museum on 21 May, in what authorities suspect to be a targeted antisemitic attack.
A 30-year-old man, identified as Elias Rodriguez from Chicago, is in custody.
The victims, described as a young couple soon to be engaged, were gunned down around 9pm near the intersection of 3rd and F Streets NW, just 2km from the White House.
Washington Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith confirmed the attack involved a single gunman, who had earlier been seen pacing outside the museum.
The assailant opened fire with a handgun at a group of four individuals, fatally hitting the two embassy staff.
Smith said the suspect entered the museum immediately after the attack, where he was detained by event security.
After being restrained, he disclosed where he had discarded the weapon, which has since been recovered.
The suspect, Rodriguez, reportedly chanted “Free Palestine, Free Palestine” after being taken into custody, according to police.
Smith added that Rodriguez had no prior contact with law enforcement agencies.

Yechiel Leiter, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, told reporters that one of the victims had purchased an engagement ring earlier in the week. He had planned to propose in Jerusalem the following week.
Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli identified one of the victims on social media as Yaron Lischinsky, a 28-year-old political officer at the Israeli Embassy in Washington.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed shock and grief following the attack.
In a public statement, he said: “My heart aches for the families of the beloved young man and woman, whose lives were cut short by a heinous anti-Semitic murderer.”
He added that security measures would be enhanced at Israeli missions worldwide.
US President Donald Trump condemned the violence on Truth Social, stating, “These horrible DC killings, based obviously on antisemitism, must end, NOW! Hatred and Radicalism have no place in the USA.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi and US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro visited the crime scene shortly after the shooting.
Deputy FBI Director Don Bongino confirmed the agency is fully engaged in the investigation. He stated that preliminary evidence suggests the attack was a targeted act of violence.
The shooting occurred as guests departed an event hosted by the American Jewish Committee at the Capital Jewish Museum.
The gathering, titled the Young Diplomats Reception, was described as a networking event for Jewish professionals and Washington’s diplomatic community.
In the aftermath of the incident, mourners gathered at the intersection where the shooting took place.
Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the attack. Law enforcement officials have yet to confirm whether federal hate crime charges will be pursued.
