In her speech on 22 September 2025, Workers’ Party Member of Parliament for Sengkang GRC, He Ting Ru, responded to the President’s Address by advocating for a renewed focus on fairness, inclusion, and tangible support for Singaporeans navigating an increasingly complex socio-economic landscape.
She welcomed the President’s call for strengthening Singapore’s social compact and stressed the importance of not just economic growth, but ensuring the benefits are shared widely and equitably.
He Ting Ru emphasised the urgency of addressing social inequality and building a society that “does not leave anyone behind.” She expressed concern over whether current national policies truly reflect this spirit, and questioned if the government’s future plans adequately respond to the challenges citizens face.
A central theme of her speech was the recognition and support of unpaid caregiving work. She noted that unpaid caregivers, often women, form a vital part of the social infrastructure but remain largely unsupported and invisible within the broader economic and policy framework.
She proposed the introduction of a “caregiver support package” that would provide practical assistance such as subsidies, respite care services, and career re-entry support. This, she argued, would help integrate caregivers into the nation’s development without penalising their contributions.
Workplace fairness also featured prominently. He Ting Ru raised concerns about persistent inequities and discriminatory practices in employment, noting that while legislative reforms have been discussed, there remains a gap in both enforcement and protection for vulnerable workers.
She also addressed the broader issue of income insecurity. The rising cost of living, precarious job arrangements, and insufficient safety nets for the self-employed were cited as barriers to a fairer society.
He Ting Ru called for greater clarity in how the government defines and supports essential work. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many in essential roles received recognition but little meaningful long-term support. She urged the government to revisit how these roles are valued and compensated in a sustainable manner.
On national unity and trust, He Ting Ru stressed the need for transparency and accountability in governance. She highlighted the importance of building trust through open communication, clear reasoning behind policies, and allowing space for diverse voices in Parliament and civil society.
The speech concluded with a reaffirmation of the Workers’ Party’s commitment to working with all stakeholders in Parliament to build a better Singapore. He Ting Ru underscored the importance of shared effort and mutual respect in steering the country forward.
Referencing the President’s theme of moving “Forward Singapore,” she noted that national progress is best achieved when it is inclusive, participatory, and leaves no citizen unheard or unsupported.
Her address was part of the parliamentary debate following the ceremonial opening of the 15th Parliament, during which Members of Parliament respond to the President’s Speech delivered at the Istana on behalf of the government.
