The 29th Lion City Cup kicks off at Jalan Besar Stadium, where Southeast Asia’s top Under-16 talents converge.
More than trophies, Cambodia, the Philippines and Hong Kong, China prize the international experience this Cup delivers.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Cambodia head coach Nicolas-Charles Grezault emphasised that his focus for his young side is on growth, rather than results.
“It’s the first time that the team will be playing internationally, and we are expecting to play against high-quality opposition,” he said. “Everyone wants to win, but our priority is to apply our football principles on the field – to see where we stand in our development, and how we can improve”
Cambodia midfielder Sroeung Devid added: “This is my first international tournament, and I’m very excited to be able to compete and give our 100% for the country.”
Head coach Takuro Hosaka is focused on building a strong foundation for his Hong Kong, China team, using the tournament as a platform to nurture young talent.
“It’s an amazing opportunity for us to prepare for the future, and our main priority is to develop our players. Playing against different countries will enhance our international exposure,” he explained.
Echoing his coach’s sentiments, midfielder Jay Marc Chan stressed the importance of forging a strong team identity.
“We want to win the tournament, but I think the way we work together is more important,” he explained. “Our goal is to play an attractive style of football that allows us to express ourselves.”
Over in the Philippines’ camp, assistant coach Richard Leyble is keen to see how his squad measures up against regional opposition.
“We have called up the best players from our centre of development in each of our Regional Football Associations (RFA) to prepare for this tournament,” he said. “This allows the boys to show their talents on the international stage, as well as the hard work they put in during training.
Among those looking to seize the moment is defender Alexander Peter Benedict Lomibao, who takes immense pride in donning the national kit.
“Everyone is very proud and grateful for this opportunity to represent the Philippines. We want to show the world what we are capable of.”
The Lion City Cup kicks off with the inaugural Girls’ Under-16 edition: Cambodia meet Hong Kong at 5pm on Tuesday, 8 July, at Jalan Besar Stadium, followed by Singapore versus Korea at 8pm.
