As Singapore gears up for its SG60 celebrations, a heartwarming initiative is striking a chord in the local arts scene. The Gift a Guitar Initiative, launched by SGMUSO in partnership with The Rice Company Limited (TRCL), aims to empower 600 underserved youths aged 13 to 19 by providing them with brand-new acoustic guitars and structured music lessons—nurturing the next wave of Singaporean music talent.
More than just an instrument giveaway, this initiative is a movement to give young voices a platform, using music as a tool for self-expression, empowerment, and community connection. For many of these youths, it’s a rare opportunity to pursue their creative dreams and find healing through melody.
60 Guitars, 1 Mission: A Fundraising Auction with Star Power
In support of this meaningful cause, 60 guitars—each with a unique story—will be auctioned off in August 2025. These instruments have been donated by prominent figures, musicians, and corporate sponsors, with many featuring artist signatures, custom designs, and personal touches that make them true collector’s pieces.
Among the highlights is a guitar donated and signed by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, which will be included in the auction to raise funds for the Business Times Budding Artists Fund (BT BAF). PM Wong had earlier shown support for the initiative in 2023 with a heartfelt video that helped soft-launch the programme.
The auction will be open to global bidders, inviting music lovers and philanthropists from around the world to support the cause. Prior to the auction, all 60 guitars will be on public display for two weeks to a month, giving visitors a chance to admire the craftsmanship and significance behind each piece.
Applications Open July 2025
Applications for youth participation in the Gift a Guitar Initiative will officially open in July 2025. Selected applicants will receive not only their very own guitar, but also comprehensive music lessons, helping them build confidence, discipline, and creativity through the power of music.
