At a Glance

Geylang International FC enter the new Women’s Premier League (WPL) season as one of the league’s most consistent upward movers, having risen from ninth place three seasons ago to establish themselves as a regular top-four side.

Built on hunger, continuity and a strong dressing-room culture, the club has embraced its role as a competitive disruptor while maintaining a clear identity in discipline and teamwork.

With promotion and relegation returning to the league, Geylang now face heightened expectations but remain committed to their proven formula of blending experience with youth and competing against every opponent.

On the team’s steady rise over the past three seasons
“When we started two years ago after finishing ninth, the players were the ones who drove the team. I brought in a  lot of hungry players who wanted to show they deserved to be among the big teams in the league. They were very driven and very committed, and that motivation alone pushed them to do better. The next season, we finished third.”

On lessons from last season and areas for growth
“Last season had many positives. Even when I left halfway (for a training stint in Japan), the team still did very well and the stand-in coaches steered the team and they had an amazing run in the second half of the season.

“Despite injuries, the players are the driving factor, boosting one another’s morale. What we need to improve on is consistency, because there were games we played very well, then the next game we did not.”

On maturity, continuity and squad balance
“A good thing is that many players have matured over the past two to three years, and the bulk of the team has stayed on with us. We still maintain senior players and we have a lot of younger players this time around from the National Development Centre (NDC) and previous seasons. This mixture of senior and younger players have been the key to our success for the past two, three seasons so I don’t intend to change it. I intend to work on it and improve on it.”

On expectations and embracing pressure
“I still see us as the underdog. There are always the big three teams, LCS, Albirex and now Aerion so we see ourselves as the dark horse, the ones who can ruin the party. We are not going to let anybody have an easy run. If teams prepare for us, good for them, because we prepare for everyone.”

On adapting to a more competitive league and season objectives
“With promotion and relegation back, it’s an exciting time. We want to stay in the WPL and fight for top-three positions. Every year, the tactical formation for every team differs slightly, teams are getting smarter, they are doing data and opponent analysis – and we are doing the same thing. This year there is going to be more of that, especially with live matches and I think that’s only a good thing for women’s football here.”

Farhanah Ruhaizat, Captain and Forward

Farhanah Ruhaizat celebrates her stunning long-range equaliser against Lion City Sailors with her teammates in the final WPL 2025 match, securing a draw for Geylang.

On leadership and bridging generations
“I’m still learning as a captain. Being captain for a year has groomed me a lot as a person. I get to work with players across different age groups, and I try to link these different backgrounds together so we can create chemistry on and off the pitch.”

On team spirit, resilience and lessons carried into the new season
One of our most meaningful moments last season was the draw against LCS. We were down to a limited group of players, but the team kept the spirit high and still produced a very respectable result. That Geylang team spirit is the biggest lesson we’re carrying into the new season.”

On the current squad and excitement for the season
“We have experienced and quality players joining the team, and we hope that these players can blend in well with the team. Even though many of them are young, they know football, and it’s really nice to see us playing proper football compared to a few years ago when we all started.”

On ambitions and personal goals
“Our goal is to be at least in the top three again. We were very close last year, and this year we want to take that step up. Personally, I just want to lead the team as much as I can, give my respect and my all to the team.”
