SINGAPORE: Workers’ Party (WP) candidate Andre Low will contest against People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate Ng Chee Meng in the newly formed Jalan Kayu Single Member Constituency (SMC) during the upcoming general election.
Ng, 56, was officially announced by the PAP on 19 April as their candidate for Jalan Kayu SMC.
However, it was only on Nomination Day, 23 April, that the Workers’ Party confirmed Low, 34, as its challenger.
Although the WP had been actively distributing flyers in the area in the lead-up, the candidate’s identity remained undisclosed until Low was seen entering Deyi Secondary School—the nomination centre for Jalan Kayu and three other constituencies.
Low is a former disputes lawyer who currently works as a staff product manager at a global financial technology firm.
He has held previous roles at Drew & Napier, the Boston Consulting Group, and in start-ups across sectors such as legal-tech, urban mobility, and health-tech.
Since joining the WP in 2020, Low has worked closely with Sengkang GRC MP Louis Chua, serving as secretarial assistant, overseeing Meet-the-People Session operations, and contributing to both grassroots engagement and policy development.
He also serves on WP’s media team, focusing on digital strategy and communication, and appeared in a 2024 video alongside Gerald Giam to explain WP’s redundancy insurance proposal.
Ng, a former Chief of Defence Force, entered politics in 2015 as part of the PAP team contesting Pasir Ris–Punggol GRC.
He went on to serve as Minister for Education (Schools) and Second Minister for Transport, and in 2018 became Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC).
Despite being unseated in the 2020 election when the WP captured Sengkang GRC, Ng retained his role as Labour chief.
Ng has highlighted his longstanding ties to Jalan Kayu, Seletar, and Fernvale, having “grown up” in the area during his time with the Singapore Youth Flying Club and later as a pilot in the Republic of Singapore Air Force.
Jalan Kayu SMC, comprising 29,565 registered voters, was carved out of Ang Mo Kio GRC following the most recent electoral boundaries review.
