SINGAPORE: The Workers’ Party (WP) team in Sengkang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) is set to defend its seat against a renewed People’s Action Party (PAP) lineup led by Dr Lam Pin Min in Singapore’s General Election scheduled for 3 May 2025.

Both teams confirmed their candidacies after filing nomination papers at Yusof Ishak Secondary School on 23 April.

Representing the WP are He Ting Ru, Louis Chua, Associate Professor Jamus Lim, and newcomer Abdul Muhaimin Abdul Malik.

Abdul Muhaimin, who works as a senior property manager with the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council, replaces Raeesah Khan—the former MP who resigned in 2021 after admitting to having lied in Parliament.

The WP team faces a PAP slate that has been significantly refreshed since the last election.

Dr Lam, a former Senior Minister of State, is the only returning face from the PAP’s 2020 Sengkang team.

He is joined by three new candidates: Bernadette Giam, Theodora Lai, and Associate Professor Elmie Nekmat.

Sengkang GRC, which has 126,641 registered voters, will see no alterations to its electoral boundaries since the previous polls.

After the WP team’s candidacy was confirmed, He Ting Ru delivered a short speech.

“It has been a privilege to serve as your representatives in parliament, where we have fought for issues that matter to you and to Singapore.

“The Workers’ Party team have been honoured to share in your joy, your tears, and your fears; but the journey does not end here. This election we are seeking your vote, so that we may continue working for Sengkang.”

Dr Lam also addressed voters, stating: “For the past four years, we have worked hard to earn back your trust. We want to be your voice in parliament.”

In the 2020 election, PAP’s Sengkang team was helmed by labour chief Ng Chee Meng, alongside Dr Lam, Amrin Amin, and lawyer Raymond Lye.

This time, Ng is standing in Jalan Kayu Single Member Constituency (SMC), while Amrin and Mr Lye are not contesting.

WP’s win in Sengkang in 2020, with 52.13 per cent of the vote, was one of the tightest victories in that election.

It also marked just the second time in the nation’s history that an opposition party had clinched a GRC, following WP’s earlier win in Aljunied.

The outcome brought four additional WP members into Parliament, strengthening the opposition’s presence.

It also led then-Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to appoint WP chief Pritam Singh as Singapore’s first official Leader of the Opposition.
