SINGAPORE: The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) emphasised the importance of having Members of Parliament (MPs) who truly represent the people and work to improve their lives.

Alfred Tan, the SDP candidate for Sembawang Group Representation Constituency (GRC), delivered a compelling message to voters on Friday (25 April) in the first public political broadcast for the General Election 2025.

Tan began by acknowledging the rising pressures faced by Singaporeans, particularly the growing cost of living.

He highlighted how many people are watching their savings diminish, and their hopes for a secure future slip away due to skyrocketing prices.

With job insecurity and intense workplace pressure looming large, Tan pointed out that many Singaporeans fear being replaced in their jobs.

“All this is happening while the PAP remains indifferent to our hardships, raising the GST and prices for water, bus and MRT fares, housing, etc., in the midst of financial and emotional difficulties,” said Tan.

“SDP MPs will hold the government accountable and push to lower costs so that you and your family can thrive, not just survive,” he continued.

SDP is fielding 11 candidates across four constituencies in the upcoming May 3 polls: Bukit Panjang SMC, Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, Sembawang GRC, and Sembawang West SMC.

“You deserve MPs, SDP MPs, who will fight for you, who will go to Parliament with only one thing in mind: how to make your lives better.”

SDP’s Vision for a Prosperous Singapore

In his broadcast speech on Friday, Tan outlined three key ways SDP MPs would lower the cost of living.

First, they would reduce the GST to 7 per cent “or even 5 per cent,” and remove it for everyday essentials.

To make homes more affordable, the SDP’s “Non-Open Market” scheme for Build-to-Order flats would exclude land costs, allowing Singaporeans to own a home without falling into a debt trap, he explained.

Additionally, the SDP would lower medical expenses, although Tan did not elaborate on the specifics in the broadcast.

However, the party’s manifesto includes proposals to make maternal and paediatric services “largely free” through tax funding, as well as to establish a “risk pooling system” for primary healthcare services for chronic illnesses.

Beyond cost reduction, Tan also outlined the SDP’s approach to protecting jobs and empowering Singaporeans.

The party plans to prioritise local workers by reducing the influx of foreign professionals, managers, executives, and technicians (PMETs).

Another key proposal is the introduction of a Minimum Wage Act, ensuring that every Singaporean earns a wage that reflects the true cost of living.

Finally, Tan emphasised the need to address mental health issues, which have been exacerbated by high living costs and overpopulation.

A Vision for a Compassionate and Thriving Society

Tan contrasted the SDP’s vision with the PAP’s policies, which he argued have only led to higher living costs and increased job insecurity.

He stated, “The SDP offers a clear and better alternative. Our vision isn’t just about managing day-to-day struggles. We want Singaporeans to thrive, not just survive.”

He called for a more compassionate Singapore, where the government supports its people rather than exploits them.

The SDP’s vision also includes fostering a society that values creativity, innovation, and community, ensuring that every citizen feels at home.

“This isn’t merely an election campaign,” Tan concluded.

“It’s a movement for change. A better tomorrow. But don’t just hope for change. Act for change. Vote the SDP.”

He ended the broadcast by sending his warmest regards to the people of Singapore, urging them to choose a better future for themselves and their families.
