SINGAPORE: The People’s Action Party (PAP) has announced Low Yen Ling as its candidate for the newly created Bukit Gombak Single Member Constituency (SMC) in the upcoming General Election.
The announcement was made on 14 April 2025 at the PAP’s branch office at Block 10 Teck Whye Avenue.
The party also introduced its team for Chua Chu Kang Group Representation Constituency (GRC).
Low is currently the Senior Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth, as well as for Trade and Industry. She also serves as the Mayor of the South West District.
“I am committed to looking after the needs, the welfare, the aspirations and the interests of our Bukit Gombak residents,” Low said during the event.
She highlighted her longstanding connection with the community, noting the rapport and friendships she has built over more than a decade.
Low has served the Bukit Gombak ward for over 14 years. She first entered politics in the 2011 General Election as part of the PAP’s Chua Chu Kang GRC team.
In the 2020 General Election, she contested the GRC alongside Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and Members of Parliament Don Wee and Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim.
The team won 58.64 per cent of the vote against the Progress Singapore Party (PSP), a significant drop from the 76.89 per cent achieved in 2015.
PSP’s 2020 performance in the constituency ranked third-highest nationwide for the party. Their slate included Francis Yuen, Tan Meng Wah, Abdul Rahman Mohamad and Choo Shaun Ming.
For GE2025, PAP confirmed that Gan and Zhulkarnain will remain in Chua Chu Kang GRC.
Low will instead contest Bukit Gombak SMC, which includes Bukit Gombak and Hillview estates and has 26,364 registered voters.
In recent months, PSP has increased its visibility across the constituency. Members have maintained a consistent presence since 2020 through community outreach and engagement efforts.
In January 2025, an incident involving volunteers from both parties occurred during a walkabout in Bukit Gombak.
The matter was referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for review. No public updates have been issued since.
Despite this, PSP continues to sustain ground activity, conducting regular walkabouts and outreach programmes across western Singapore.
While PSP has not yet formally announced its candidates for Bukit Gombak SMC and Chua Chu Kang GRC, the uptick in engagement suggests preparations for GE2025 are well underway.
Speculation remains that the next General Election will be held in early May, though no official date has been confirmed.
