Potong Pasir Single Member Constituency (SMC) will see a three-cornered fight in the upcoming General Election.
Candidates from the People’s Action Party (PAP), People’s Alliance for Reform (PAR), and Singapore People’s Party (SPP) have formally entered the contest.
Lawyer Alex Yeo will seek to retain the ward for the PAP in what will be his second General Election outing.
All three candidates filed their nominations on 23 April 2025 at Kong Hwa School.
Their appearance followed the retirement of long-time PAP Member of Parliament Sitoh Yih Pin. He made the announcement shortly after the close of nominations, via an Instagram post.
Sitoh, 61, served Potong Pasir for three terms beginning in 2011. His victory then ended the alternative parties’ 27-year hold on the ward.
Yeo highlights continuity and future planning
Speaking to the media, Yeo said he is focused on the PAP’s plans for Potong Pasir rather than the contest itself.
“I think it is important for any representative coming to Potong Pasir that we have to blend our rich heritage of the past together with the dreams and aspirations of our residents in the future,” he said.
Yeo first entered the political scene in 2020, contesting Aljunied GRC as part of a PAP team that lost with 40.05 percent of the vote.
Lee calls for practical leadership in Parliament
SPP’s Williamson Lee, 46, described the constituency as closely tied to the party’s legacy.
Chiam See Tong, the former SPP leader, held the seat from 1984 until 2011.
Lee said he would do his best throughout the campaign, adding: “I will try to reach out to every resident.”
In his remarks following nomination, Lee posed a direct question to voters.
“Do you want an MP who sits quietly as a backbencher, or one who opposes for the sake of opposing?” he asked.
“Or would you prefer an MP who can craft practical and implementable solutions for all residents?”
Lim dismisses vote-splitting concerns
Lim Tean, the PAR’s secretary-general, placed emphasis on broader concerns.
He cited cost of living, housing affordability, job security, and foreign manpower as top priorities.
“The whole of Singapore is like an orchard with fruit trees, bearing very sweet fruit for the opposition this year,” said Lim.
He expressed confidence in the opposition’s prospects across the country.
Lim also rejected concerns that a three-way race would divide opposition votes.
He argued that past elections have shown alternative party supporters consolidating behind the strongest candidate.
“People all want to back a winner, don’t they?” he said.
Recent changes by the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee could influence the outcome.
Two precincts from Potong Pasir were moved to Marine Parade GRC following rapid population growth in Bidadari.
These adjustments could shift the demographic balance and reshape voter behaviour in the constituency.
