The People’s Action Party (PAP) has announced that lawyer Alex Yeo will stand as its candidate for Potong Pasir Single Member Constituency (SMC) in the upcoming General Election.
The announcement was made on 16 April 2025, one week before Nomination Day.
Yeo will replace Sitoh Yih Pin, who is stepping down after serving three terms as Member of Parliament (MP) since 2011.
Sitoh’s entry into Parliament marked the end of a 27-year hold on Potong Pasir by the opposition, first under Chiam See Tong of the Singapore Democratic Party and later the Singapore People’s Party (SPP).
Chiam had vacated the seat in 2011 to contest Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC.
Yeo was part of PAP’s Aljunied GRC team in GE2020, which lost to Workers’ Party
Alex Yeo, 46, was part of the People’s Action Party (PAP) team that contested Aljunied GRC in the 2020 General Election. His teammates included Chua Eng Leong, Shamsul Kamar, Chan Hui Yuh, and Victor Lye.
The Workers’ Party, led by Pritam Singh, won the constituency with 59.95 per cent of the vote—their widest margin of victory in Aljunied to date.
Yeo also served as branch chairman of PAP’s Paya Lebar division. He has led multiple community-focused initiatives, notably establishing a Community Legal Clinic in Potong Pasir in 2016.
Speaking at a PAP event at the Potong Pasir branch, Yeo paid tribute to Sitoh’s 25 years of service to the community.
“Personally, he’s been a dear mentor of mine,” Yeo said. “I’ve learned a lot about community leadership and service from him.”
He expressed a sense of familiarity with the area, highlighting his ongoing involvement with residents and volunteers through his legal outreach.
“So returning to Potong Pasir now… feels like I’ve come home,” he added.
Yeo noted the evolving demographic in Potong Pasir, now home to a growing number of young families and multi-generational households.
He emphasised the importance of respecting the constituency’s heritage while addressing the aspirations of its future.
Sitoh’s political journey in Potong Pasir began with a narrow victory in 2011, winning 50.36 per cent of the vote against SPP’s Lina Chiam.
He later increased his majority to 66.39 per cent in 2015, and retained the seat with 60.67 per cent in 2020 against SPP’s Jose Raymond.
Lina Chiam, the wife of Chiam See Tong, contested the seat in 2011 and 2015 but was unsuccessful in both attempts.
Jose Raymond’s challenge in 2020 marked the SPP’s most recent bid for the ward before his retirement from politics.
Both the Singapore People’s Party and the People’s Alliance for Reform (PAR) have signalled their intention to contest Potong Pasir SMC in the upcoming election.
The constituency has also undergone boundary changes. Two precincts were moved to Marine Parade GRC as part of the latest Electoral Boundaries Review Committee adjustments.
This change reflects population increases due to new housing developments in Bidadari.
As of 1 February 2025, Potong Pasir SMC has 30,897 registered voters, up from 19,731 in 2020.
